Arrow Help... trying to remove rear seat from 4th gen Camaro

as the topic says, I want my back seat out. I've removed all the bolts and everything, but the damn seatbelts are in some stupid bracket attached to the side of the large back part of the seats... and the screws have some stupid six-star pattern. I've tryed using philips, but they don't work. Is there an easy way to disconnect the seat belts, or do I have to go see if I can find this stupid star screwdriver?

It's not a stupid star pattern.. it's a Torx screw, it's meant to keep people like you and me who don't have the correct tools from messing with the restraint system. Go to Sears and buy a Torx 47 bit/socket. that's the correct size, should only maybe cost $5... then you'll have the right tool for the job.

Ok, but I also removed my passenger seat, and the bracket on that was only held on by philips screws.

So you say it's a 47 Torx? maybe I'll go get one. I need to go buy a small 13mm wrench anyway if I ever expect to put my passenger seat back in.

You lie! I went to sears, and first off they only had them in increments of 5, and was told there isn't even such thing as a 47. So I bought a 45, and it was WAAAYYYY too big! so I took it back and got a 30, and it fits perfect. I can only assume american cars have different size? unless you're talking about the torx screw holding the seatbelt to the floor, which is a lot bigger, but disconnecting that will do nothing becuase you still can't fit the latch part through that plastic bracket. I'm not trying to remove the seatblet entirely, just disconnect it from the rear seat for a little while.

Cool

I had the same problem and I had the right torx tool and they still wouldn't come off
so I just cut slits in the bracket to slide out the belts!

Fist off, I thought you were talking about the large bolts in the floor for the seatbelts. Second off I don't lie... there is such thing as a 47, I have one outside in my tool box right now.

Nice way to respond to someone who is trying top help. It was obvious he thought you were talking about the bolt that holds the belts to the floor. There are a lot of things some Sears tool salesmen are not familiar with... even if they might sell it.

Kind of surprised anyone can own a 4th Gen without having a set of Torx screwdrivers and bits... they are all over the car.

Ya man he was trying to help.

Anyway, why not do what I did. Go to Autozone, tell them you need to figure out what size torx it takes grab a couple and see which one works. The salesman will escort you while you do it so dont run. lol.

Not sure but I think I used a 50. I also have it at home in my toolbox.

Red face

Relax guys, i was trying to be sarcastic. He did help, becuase after I read his post, I drove over to sears and got the part I needed. I tried getting the sears people to let me "try before I buy" but they wouldn't. so I just bought the 45, went out, it didn't fit, mesured the screw, went back in, echanged for the 30, and that worked. I also agree about the sears people not knowing anything. I realized right away he was talking about the torx screw on the floor once I seen that the plastic bracket was only a 30 torx. but I dont't see how removing that will help, becuase you can't fit the actual latch part through the plastic bracket anyway. But what puzzled me is the bracket on the front passenger seat was only held on with philips screws, but the rear was a 30 torx? Sorry if I sounded like an ******* Mike, but I try to make a joke out of everything. I thought if you owned a 97 you'd know about the plastic brackets and how they need to come off but maybe you've never removed your rear seat? I don't want to also remove the seatbelts; I only removed my seats (also my spare & jack) for a lightweight conversion for the track, they're going right back in.

"What we have here is a failure to communicate"

He is NOT asking how to remove the bolts that hold the belt ends into the floor... he is asking how to remove the screws that hold the plastic loops to the back of the seat. I just unscrewed mine, and I'd look, but I don't know where I put the screws. As I recall, they are very hard to break loose, but if you perservere, they will come out.

An even better approach, and one that really helps the weight savings, is to remove the rear belts completely. I bet the two belt assemblies weigh as much as the seats..... . I have no rear seat, no rear belts, 5-pt harness only (no stock belt) on the driver's seat, which is a 16# Corbeau.

I see now. Thanks Fred.

Aneurysm, another way I would go about trying, like Fred hinted to, is just to remove all the seatbelt stuff and the back seat will come out with it.

If you arent going to have any seats back there, then there really is no reason for the seatbelt either. It will be easier that way too. I tried your way and never got them out either.

we Must all remeber that it is sears. when Bob Vila is the comapanys endorser you know that all the people they hire are master mechanics.

No offense to those who work at sears and know whats going on.
