Something incredibly interesting I've never heard before is this... I thought this was a "new thing" with the 2010 Camaros. I've never heard of this being available for 4th gens.

GM Performance Parts “bodies in white” are a great way to get your race car
project up and running. A body in white is a complete body shell that
includes hood, fenders, doors, deck lid, floor pan, quarter panels, cowl and
roof. In essence a complete body, less glass, fascias, and all hardware. These
bodies come painted with a special sealer primer. If you are wondering why
we call them bodies in white, the name dates back several decades and is an
auto industry term that refers to a body used to set up an assembly line, in
order to build a newly redesigned vehicle. Historically, when the assembly
plant finished with a body in white, the body was either destroyed, given to
engineering for prototype use, or occasionally these bodies in white would
find their way to the factory sponsored racers. So, even though things are
done a little differently today, we still call these bare bodies, bodies in white.
You can call them whatever you like, just keep in mind that they make great
race cars and pro-street cars.

My mind is blown. :dead: GM even had racing components available through GMPP that I have never heard of for 4th gens. Aluminum drive shafts... components to adapt '96 Corvette brakes to 4th gens...

Where the heck was I all this time to not hear about this?

Does anybody here own a 15 year old GM Performance Parts catalog?

My 96 was like this. Crank windows, manual mirrors, power locks. It was teal w/teal hardtop, grey cloth seats, auto, 2.73 rear. No leather-wrapped wheel or anything else unusual. 4-speaker sound system, IIRC. Im not sure if I have any pics of the inside for reference.

My '96 v6, no power windows had the same thing. I actually have never seen a 4th gen with manual locks... not to say they dont exist. Unfortunately I sold the car so I have no info on it.

The 95 Z I sold recently did not have power locks, and the windows and mirrors were manual as well.

This pic is of a '97 Z28. I checked the VIN, and it has AU0 (keyless entry), AU3 (power locks), A90 (keyless hatch release), and lacks A31 (power windows).

Very interesting. If anyone happens to have a '97 brochure, it'd be interesting to see what package they didn't get. I assume their lack of leather covered steering wheel is part of what is the missing package...

I remember looking at a brand new 1996 RS T-top car that was just like that but had leather and no fog lights.

It's so weird and unique that GM would offer the Camaro with three different switch options. It's very unusual. You'd think they would have cost-cut and just offered power locks and power windows on ALL Camaros, and perhaps offer manual locks and windows as an option. I am really surprised that they offered manual windows and power locks as well. Super surprising to me.

TD95Z 08-18-2010 01:54 PM

It sure is. Ohio must be the land of strange options, since I always seem to find them. Even my current TA is kind of an oddball. Being a 94, it's actually a Formula-based car. As such, it has the molded spoiler, the base Firebird cloth seats, and no t-tops. It might not be the rarest car on the block, but I sure don't see them around here.

That's pretty odd. I remember Pontiac made the high rise spoiler optional back then on T/A coupes. I believe it was called the GT spoiler, but don't quote me on that.

Mine has the performance button, but none of the other stuff. I could be wrong, but I think all of em have the trans perform button.

Is there any pictures of this "trans button"? Is it only on automatic cars?

According to all of my 4th gen Camaro brochures, power door locks could be ordered as an option on their own.
On the Camaro convertibles, power locks were standard equipment.

Only 5 were made in '99. These 5 were made because of a Days Inn contest in 1998 that advertised they were giving away 5 gold Camaros. The contract said they had to be gold, so GM made them gold. Supposedly 2 were given away in the contest; the other 3 were sold at auction. I have yet to see any of them go up for sale. One of them was rumored to have been totaled, but I don't know how much truth there is to that.

Well, I'm not quite sure if the one I had seen in A&A Auto Parts here in Berea, KY (I live less than a mile away) was a '99, but it was a totaled Sport Gold Metallic Chevrolet Camaro, Z28 too I believe. I ran into it parts hunting for some leather seats today for my '98 M5 V6.

There's a better chance of it being a '98, but then again you never know ...
