4th gen cracked dash (of course)

i have a 99 SS G2 i am restoring for a fix n flip and it, like 99% of these cars, has a cracked dash.

I have found the relatively cheap plastic dash cover things that you glue down, on ebay, but, i'm wondering if anyone has first hand experience with them, and can confirm that they are of a decent quality, and worth the effort. Granted, i'm flipping this car, but i still want it to last for whoever buys it, you know?

Some have good luck with repairing it with Vinyl.

Edit - 6 Litre Eaters also sells ABS Plastic Replacements

WOW!!! that's a great idea, and looks really good! thanks man!

--

hmm.. i did read something that concerns me though, about the glue losing it's tack in heat. I'm in Texas, where it tends to get to.. oh, 110 outside in the summer, which means about 150 in the car with the windows up, and probably 200 on the dash itself in direct sunlight. Not sure how to overcome that. it doesn't seem like anyone has an answer for that.

more research will have to be done, but it DOES seem like a great idea, and i have no problem doing it.

Thanks again!

and if anyone has had success with the aforementioned covers, let me know, but, now i'm thinking that the adhesive for THAT will have the same issue. dang...

I usually park my cars indoors, but that doesn't mean the next owner will. hmmmmmmm

yeah... GA.. been there in the summer, i agree, very similar, but a LOT more humid in the foresty areas. omg! so if it holds up there, it should hold up here for sure..

Just FYI for other future readers, Autozone does sell high heat durable trim spray (glue), and i think that's what i'm going to try anyway.

I just wonder if by the time i'm done buying the can of glue and the vinyl, if my total cost will still be less than the aforementioned dash pad thing.

I haven't bought vinyl for a little while, so i don't know what it costs currently.

undoubtedly, the vinyl will look better anyway,

If you're still on the fence about repairing it - I also remembered there is a guy who just makes carpet style covers to simply put over the top - obviously it doesn't fix the issue, but it's an easy way to cover it up.

Anyone know the difference between these 2 dash pad numbers? #10422746 or #10410583? I am looking for a New Black/Ebony Dash Pad for my 1999 Camaro Z28 manufacture date 2/99. I am the original owner and am being told that my interior is grey and it is NOT. Please Help

According to the parts manual, 10422746 is for a 97 through 99 Camaro and 10410583 is for 00 through 02 Camaro. It doesn't mention any reference to color. The Ebony interior option wasn't available until 2000, 1999 was Dark Gray. That said, I believe the dashes were all black no matter what year of production. Here are pictures from a 99 and 00 Camaro to show the differences. The picture on the left is the 99 and the right is a 00.

The Camaro White Book confirms the above changes from 1999 dark gray to 2000 ebony (true black). Shows the following codes:

1999 interior codes:

14B = dark gray cloth
142 = dark gray leather

2000 codes:

19B = ebony (true black) cloth
192 = ebony (true black) leather

Unfortunately the White Book does not get into the color of the dash panel.

Things like the radio bezel and the dash air vent part numbers are shown as the same between 97-02. If there was a difference in color, you would think that would effect these items as well. Something I have noticed on the 00 is the ebony door panel plastics is darker than the 98 I own.

Re: 4th gen cracked dash (of course)

I made some dash blanking plates and a switch mount for a buddy's 97 30th SS Convertible (white leather). I painted them with the same Eastwood Company “Graphite” vinyl paint that I used on my 94 Formula for a radio blanking plate and molding a double pod into the A-pillar cover - perfect match on both cars. It wouldn’t surprise me if they used the same color dash pieces for all the years.

Would there be any physical changes to the dash cover that were made in 2000 that might have necessitated a new part #.... something like the security LED or the DRL sensor?

I wondered the same thing. All the illustrations in the service manuals that I could find look to be the same for both years.

...not sure that's accurate. When I ordered my Double DIN radio bezel, I had to specify '97-'99 or '00-'02 because the colors were different and I was having it painted to match my interior...

You may be right. I was just going off the information in the attached file.

For what it's worth, 2 years ago I had the beginnings of the dash cracking on my 98 TA and bought a vinyl dash cover on eBay. It was black and I had to paint it to match the dark gray. It went very well and I am satisfied with the results.

Re: 4th gen cracked dash (of course)

I recently bought a new dash pad from my hometown dealer where I originally bought my car. Their pricing was surprisingly "decent", but by no means cheap. I'm going to have to remove my factory dash pad in order to clean some stuff out of the defrost vent and I'm just assuming it's going to crack. I wish I had known this was such a big issue before these things got ridiculously expensive. The prices for the LS1 dash pads are even worse.

Bought one for my 97 and you can barly tell its there. Fits right over the broken one. Just epoxy it down using some sand bags for weight. Good as new.
