Steering column lock/key assembly removal
Steering column lock/key assembly removal
No, I'm not trying to steal a 4th gen . . .
I'm getting my '97 camaro set to go again for race-only duty and I need to get the steering column lock and key assembly out and disabled.
Anyone with some auto-theft experience care to help me??
Thanks!!
Don

Are you trying to use a toggle switch to start the motor (totally bypass the key altogether)? Although I don't have much knowledge of how exactly people set-up for "race only", maybe I can still point you in the right direction.
The easiest way I can see to accomplish this is to leave the ign. cyl. alone. If you drop the column, you'll see a white box. This is the "brains" of the ignition as far as the positions of the key. As you turn the key, there is linkage that slides contacts. It's abit hard to explain (especaily at 4am
), but you'll see what I mean. You can then take the wires off of that box and use switches and relays to make it work w/ out using a key.
Again, I have no experience with setting somthing like this up (have had no need to), but if I were to this is prob. what I'd do. If any one else has a different/proven way, hopefully they can chime in.

Ok, thanks, but I should have added more info . . .
Every solitary peice of wire has been removed from the car. The dash has been stripped, cut up for weight savings and its shell reinstalled. I'm temporarily using the stock column (which has also been stripped of all parts/wire) and I want to get the lock/tumbler out for saftey reasons and so I don't have to keep track of a key just to drive the car.
Thanks!!

Well . . . there wasn't an "Auto Theft" forum, so I figured this was the next best option since it isn't mainstream tech like "why don't my power windows work" or "which panhard bar is the best".
You need to remove airbag/streeing wheel, lockplate, turnsignal switch. Now you can remove a single screw that holds the key switch. I would also take the pin that engages the lock plate out.
You need a hub puller fot the streeing wheel and a lockplate depresser to get the snapring out that holds the lock plate.
