600hp and 28mpg
i read in one of my super chevy magazines about this 69 camaro that had a ls1 and a f.a.s.t. engine management system that got over 600 hp and 28mpg. i cant find this magazine for the life of me, but ultimatly i want to get my 96z28 to pump out that kind of power (600 to 800 hp) with that kind of fuel economy(basically anything above 20mpg) what do i need to do? my current mods are listed in my signature.

well, I'll be the first to suggest that you stop dreaming! I for one would LOVE to see that article. An honest to goodness 600HP motor AND 28 MPG? Shouldn't even be uttered in the same breath IMHO.
Ok, now that opinion is out of the way...
Only thing I can think of that even MIGHT be able to muster something like that would be an I6 motor on the smallish side running a turbo and a LOT of boost (and maybe N2O as well). Needless to say you wouldn't make the 600HP and the 28 MPG at the same time

yeah, If i had to guess it was probably some type of turbo car, that got 28 mpg on a highway trip that never saw significant boost levels, which is feasible if tuned perfectly with a DFI setup. I don't see anyway possible to make that on a NA setup...but I guess anything is possible (i.e. that new cacillac (i think) that shuts down all but 4 sylinders when cruising on the highway).

i never said it was boosted or na. honestly all i remember from the article was 600 hp and 28mpg it was a yellow first gen on the cover of the super chevy magazine and not the one with the purple ghost flames either.

I think it would be more common on a turbo car or a supercharged veh. Ive seen some LT1 cars makeing 500+ at the wheel and still get 22-24mpg on the highway. True, they wouldnt be seeing hardly any boost during these sessions but I think its very possble. But if were talking n/a, Im goona have to say no to that one.

It depends if that 600hp was at the crank, or at the wheels. NA tuning has come along way, and I could see 600 at the crank and 28 mpg, especially with an LSx style motor. My wifes Z06 has a TSP cam, SLP headers, Intake, exhaust, etc. and puts down 425hp to the ground. Thats approaching 500 at the crank, and it gets over 31 mpg on the highway in 6th gear at 65. I would Imagine the new c6 zo6 with its DOD technology could get to 600 at the crank with a cam, and some airflow improvements on the intake and exhaust, and still be over 30mpg on the highway.

I saw it, it was a NA car with a 6 speed. Remember highway gas mileage to some people means "@ 55 mph". With a 6 speed you can do 55 at 1500 rpm and I believe with the F.A.S.T. system you can lean it out for the long drive.
The motor might make 600 hp but it takes less than 20 hp to keep a car rolling at 55 mph. I'd say 28 mpg is do'able.

it can be done. guy in jersey has almost 600hp and still gets 25-6 mpg. his is n/a with a 100 shot of juice, but it's still 600hp and economy. he doesnt use FAST either...just tunes the ECM
it's not impossible, there are better designed engines out there that can see over 400hp and still get over 50mpg...the oil industry has just bought them and burried them in one of their vaults with all the other good inventions they have. you know there are better designed engines than the internal combustion v-shaped engines and I shaped engines out there, like the twin turbine engines. why dont we see them??? think about it, someone who is very rich and wants to stay that way buys the designs and pays someone who invented it to stay quiet. that makes everyone else think there's no better substitute to what they have.

Not much I can say will alter your perception, but that's not how things are.
FWIW, few, if any, NA 600 hp engines are able to cruise at 1200 rpm or so and get 25+ mpg in a 3000+ vehicle even discounting emissions. There is only one 500 fwhp engined OEM car, to my knowledge, that doesn't pay a gas guzzler tax which kicks in well below 25 mpg. It'll be available in a few months at your local Chevy dealer, or at least at some of them. Yep, there's 600 fwhp available in the LS7 engine with a cam change and not a lot else, but that won't help the mpg, it'll drop it.
An NA or even blown engine that actually produces 600 fwhp consumes about 37 gallons of gas per hour while producing that 600 hp. 28 mpg at a 56 mph cruise is about 2 gallons per hour. Engines that eat 37 gph at max power don't also cruise at 2 gph. Sorry, but that's the way the world works. Hey, we are still trying to make a nuclear fusion reactor to produce electricity that puts out more energy than it consumes. This, 50+ years after we made a fusion bomb. Ironic, isn't it?

FWIW, the only thing that really counts is your vehicle's overall lifetime fuel economy, or total miles driven / total gallons. For a 3500 lb vehicle to lifetime average 28 mpg, and have 1/4 mile ETs under 15 seconds is still a challenge. Make that 12 seconds, and your song title certainly applies. Shouldn't 600 get you well into the 11's?

And I have seen SEVERAL turbo LS1's getting 20+ MPG with 600 hp. Even with 600rwhp!
EDIT: Actually, I have seen quite a few blower cars get 20+ MPG with right around 600 hp! These being LS1's also. That's a DAMN efficient motor!

Damn...I thought the title said "20 MPG", not 28!
Oh well, a basically stock LS1 with a blower(or turbo), is still a very good deal considering you can put down 500+rwhp and get over 20 MPG!
