Engine Lacks power

I cant figure out why my car does not perform right. Ive check for fuel and its getting plenty. Its also getting plenty of spark, I have the msd6al with blaster 2 coil and pro billet distributor. Ive tried to time it many times and still doesnt perform the way it should. Could a vacuum leak cause this? Anyone have any suggestions? thanks

This really doesn't belong in advanced tech, but you also havent checked much it looks like, have you done a compression check? have you checked the timeing?

Might want to mention what kind of car and what kind of engine..... the F-Body has been equipped with a wide variety of engines since 1967. Has the engine been modified from stock? If so, what mods?

When you add that info, we can move it to the correct forum.

Its a 72 350 engine. bore .030 over 11.5:1 comp. Has an isky Camshaft, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 292/ 292, Lift .505/ .505. Holley, 650 DP, Harland Sharp roller rockers. 2.02 valves. I have a lot of money in to my car and i cant get the engine to perform the way it should. For a trans i have a 700r4 with a 3600 stall, Vet servo, hughes sprag, b&m trans kit. Rear end is a 10 bolt with Superior axles, Auburn pro series posi, and 3.73 gears. I just cant find the problem. I havent done a compression test so thats what I'll be trying next. Thanks

I was just thinking, would the advance springs and stop bushings have anything to do with this?

Re: Engine Lacks power

they could. have you had any time at the track on slicks? this will give us an idea on how much power you have. what year car is it in also?

Re: Engine Lacks power

The car is an 87, I just got some hoosiers for it. I havent track tested it yet, seems like it would be pointless cause I can tell be the way it goes on the street. It idles fairly good, but when i punch it it goes but not how it should. It seems like sluggish

Re: Engine Lacks power

what heads are on the car? casing #? portwork? how did the compression thest check out? what is the timing set at?

Re: Engine Lacks power

I havent looked at the heads but i know the intake and heads are port matched. Engine is supposed to have 11.5:1 comp but i havent test it yet. Timing is set at 36degrees at 3500rpm. Plugs are gapped at 35.

I would set the advance to where it's at 25* and all in by 2500RPM's. Then set the total advance by pulling it to 3000 and maybe 36* is a good place to start.
If the Holley is a vacuum secondary I would start there and reduce the spring in the pot as to make it open sooner. If that makes it worse the go the other way.
If it's mechanical secondary check and adjust your pump stroke and check your jet size and go up or down according to your plug readings.
IMO an out of the box 650 is to small for the engine and ya might want to try and borrow a 750/780 with annular boosters to try.
Ya didn't say if it had a signal/dual plane intake. That will make a big difference. It takes time and fooling with the set up to get it right or pay someone to adjust it and dyno tune it.

Yea I been trying to get ths car running right for a while. It has a dual plane weiand stealth intake with a holley 650 dp on top. I just brought the carb to my friends dad, he is installing a proform center section that i bought. My distributor is the msd pro billet with vac. advance.

Ya can get the advance kit for it and set the mechanical like I suggested.
Maybe ya can get the carb worked out also. Hell an 850 with anular boosters will run good on that engine if ya are shifting above 6000RPM's. The downleg boosters make it hard to drive at low RPM's but there isn't much difference above 4000.
