General Motors plans to equip its large trucks and SUVs with "displacement-on-demand" (DOD) engines that, according to the company, boost fuel economy by about 8%, based on an EPA testing procedure, and up to 25% in certain real-world driving conditions. The engines will debut in 2004 as part of GM's Vortec V8 engine family. GM initially plans to produce more than 150,000 of them in the first year. Production will then be increased over the next several years to nearly 1.5 million units in 2007.

If you consider the V16 Cadillac built here last year (or was it 2 years ago?). I believe the numbers on that thing were 1000 hp and ~1000 lbs-ft torque with an average 22 mpg. Might make a legitimate 600 hp 28 mpg car with a little work. :)

I dont see ANYTHING wrong with putting an 828 ci motor in a Caddy! :D That would be sweet!

Never knew they had a "three-step DOD"??

"Aluminum construction and three-step Displacement on Demand technology are key contributors to XV16 efficiency. This flexible DOD setup allows the engine to sip fuel by running on four cylinders at cruising speed, on eight when passing, and on 16 cylinders when the driver fully awakens the Sixteen's might."

I've seen the crank in that thing... about 5 feet tall.. You sure you still want to have sex with it?

lol

I guess it weighs close to 100 lbs. then??

well take a LS1 crank and double it so yeah!

It'd be easy to do with a nitrous motor.

Re: 600hp and 28mpg

I dunno about that... You start pumping more than 250 worth of spray through a motor, and you start needing the supporting things that will kill the mileage same as any other N/A setup. We ARE talking about 600 Horses here...

Just an opinion... :)

What kind of motor only has 350 hp??

Re: 600hp and 28mpg

I think a mild 450 horsepower motor spraying 150 worth wouldn't be hard to do with that kind of fuel economy, and without having to run a lot of ring gap.

If nitrous is allowed, then it would be no problem. There are alot of lSx style motors putting down 425-450 through an M6. Add a 150 shot on that (like my wifes zo6) and your there, while still getting great gas milage.

LOL. All of my friends think the same way. z06, with mods (cam, nitrous, etc) driven by a junior high school teacher---they say I really got the car for myself. But I am really an IMPALA guy all the way, and much prefer driving my SS over the z any day. Maybe thats because my Impala is faster

its not an impossible dream and i wish i could find the magazine but that would mean cleaning. i know its possible to get 600hp and 28mpg especially if you were to put a gearvenders under over drive on it. i just wanna know how i can do it. the stock 96 z28 got 25mpg

Re: 600hp and 28mpg

My 73 AMX dynoed @ 610 HP, and w/ a 200R4 tranny it knocks down 30 mpg. Or maybe that is 3.0 MPG...
And maybe it is 61.0 HP... :D

Re: 600hp and 28mpg

I can see 25mpg and 600hp being possible with FI... but by driving it like granny, staying at highway speeds, and not getting into boost at all to achieve that number. When my Z28 had the M6/3.73s i was getting 370 miles to a tank on 13.5 gallon fill-ups regularly, which is a touch over 27mpg. Granted, this is 90% interstate driving at 75mph turning ~1900rpm and not hammering on it one single time. 355 LT1s with turbos are hitting 600hp with relative ease. If that setup existed in my car, i would put my money on getting at least 25mpg under the conditions I stated above. What kills milege is when you actually USE the power. I could easily knock off 8-10mpg on a full tank just by doing a couple WOT runs to ~100mph in my GN at 25psi boost (at that boost level, my FP gauge was showing ~65psi, that's moving a lot of fuel with 36# injectors at 5000rpm). But when not getting into boost at all on a tank, the car was averaging ~23mpg with mixed city/hwy driving.

Possible, but not practical to build a 600hp car with high milege in mind. If i built a car pushing that much power, with the money involved in getting there i'd be damned not to use all of it. So mpg would take a one-way trip out the window.
