305 v8. To be sure you can read the 8th digit of the vin number, and tell us it. That will be the identification for the engine type.

YARDofSTUF 06-25-2004 12:52 PM

E9K, one of those, dunno if the first thing is a 1 or not counted or whatever.

I was told this is not the original enigine and that a V6 was there.

What kind of potential do I have with a 305?

virtualdemo 06-25-2004 01:29 PM

Looks like a TBI L03... But if they swapped it out it could potentially be an L05, wont be able to tell till ou get block/head #s. But it looks like the original engine... Little things like the heater valve, brake booster lines, Map sensor placement... All looks original to me... Dunno but besides the rust, looks exactly like my Engine used to be....lol

Lates,

Is it usable? Also is there room for a 350 in there?

IROC-T 06-25-2004 02:44 PM

By the looks of it I would say an LO3 out of a submarine or a mud bogger ,was it in a flood? Like virtualdemo says need more #'s to be sure. Man that is nasty!

YARDofSTUF 06-25-2004 03:05 PM

Man, my baby has been given so much s***, we had a water leak from one of the pipes in the garage, right over the engine, plus a coolant and tranny leak that may have added to it?

Should I be looking into a new engine? would a 350 fit?

I just wanna drive this thing again!!!

Pneumatic_Tire 06-25-2004 03:32 PM

Yes a 350 would fit, its the same block size as a 305.

ok, cool.

Is this one still good and usable after removing the rust? is it worth that kind of time?

virtualdemo 06-25-2004 04:12 PM

Looks usable. How does it run? I would replace that poor alternator, might have rusted bushings inside. Also might replace the belt tensioner, dont look too promising there. And from the looks of things, I would check the A.I.R pump as well, or in my case remove it... I wouldnt worry too much about the rust... Its just on the surface of the pulleys, just make sure to check em out good. Replace the belt and check for slack... Trust me I have seen way worse...lol What kind of car is it? Maro or Bird? Im curious now...lol

Firebird

Ok I know what the alternator is, rest, ummm ya... :)

belt tensioner? AIR pump? Remove it?

As far as how does it run, heh. Right now it doesn't. Tanny is toast, was gonan have it rebuilt but in the gen tech forum someone mentioned that having one rebuilt is more money than buying a good condition used one and looked around and he was right.

I got an estimate of 900-1100 to have the tranny rebuilt, seen 700R4s used for about 350-450 bucks.

Now I keep reading this forum and am getting interested in this 4.10 or 4.11 gear thing. So who knows whats gonna happen with that.

Back to the engine, it ran great before the rust. when I find the stupid key and bulk order some transmission fluid I could play with starting it up.

As far as removing things, hey i'm open to whatever you guys suggest!

Alternator wise are used ones good to go with, I know the price difference at pep boys is pretty big.

YARDofSTUF 06-25-2004 05:03 PM

Ok I dug out my Chilton's 82-94 Firebird Repair book.

Air Injectio Reaction system, gotcha! :)

I dont know the particulars of your states emissions so I wont suggest removing anything. I live in New Mexico and as long as your car isnt stincking up the road they pretty much let you have your way. But I did notice an A/C delete pulley. I would pull off the condensor if its still there. The car would cool better too...

You could go with a used alternator but why? You just risk having your electrical system fried or keep replacing batteries. Dont go cheap, I learned the hard way...lol If your car is computer controlled and you have no experience with it....go with new.... well at least I would..

P.S. Dont worry about new engines till you check yours out;) unless you want an "excuse" to....lmao:cool:

LOL, The number 350 sounds so nice! :D

The problem of putting a 350 in there for me would be finding a place that would install it.

whats the difference in HP and torque between a stock 305 and a stock 350?

YARDofSTUF 06-25-2004 06:27 PM

oh and by used alternator i meant a rebuilt alternator, u have the same opinion still?
