TPI build help ..

I currently have exhaust, headers ... chip, airfoil, msd ignition .. all the lame build up stuff, other than this its stock from what i know .... i got alittle to play with and wanna get new heads and cam/lifters/rods and rockers ... I have a few questions and i'll post the parts i've been looking into ...

First, The AFR 180 heads, the max lift on them all is 550 .. "this is where i get lost" ...
Second, The Cam in question is the
"XFI" 268 Hydraulic Roller Camshaft
Chevy 262-400ci 1955-98
Lift: .570"/.565" w/1.6 Rockers
Duration: 268°/276°
RPM Range: 1800-5800

Rockers, i've been told to go with the comp magnum 1.5's ...

Will the AFR heads work well or not at all with this cam? ... i wasn't concerned with keeping it with emissions as its only driven less than 5k a year .... i'm looking for a set of heads that can take me to 400+hp ... the intake also i was thinking of opening it up to breath with was the holley STR ... flows well to 6000, cam holds to 5800 ... and of course like anyone else without a clue would ask, where bouts in an estimation will this take me trq/hp wise ... i'd also like to get a trans kit but one thing at a time ... we'll start with this setup ..

I'm guessing this is a stock shortblock 350?

Here's what PHR did with a 355/AFR 210's/XR286 cam, etc http://www.popularhotrodding.com/tec..._engine_build/

..515hp @ 6500 Peak TQ at 5000rpm with crap compression and 87 octane.. Not sure what the point of that was... I'd say just scale back on what they did if you're that lost.

Stealthram, AFR 195, 10.5:1 or 11:1 compression with an XR282HR-10 (230/236@ .050") .510/.520 with a 1.5, roughly .540/.550 with 1.6 rockers. I'd go 1.6. This combo will spin hard to 6000+ and still have good mid-range and be driveable. A converter in the 3000-3200 range will make it a beast if the tires can hook:D

With the cam however, i'd shoot for something with a 114 lobe seperation. Most of the XR rollers have a 110. Not sure if Comp Cams can make that change or you could have a custom cam made for the combination. Jay Allen at Camshaft innovations.com could set you up big time! Goodluck! OH yeah, COmp Cam Pro Magnum rocker arms are the best before getting into high dollar shaft rocker systems.!

Oh yeah, everyone seems to be making 400+hp with cleaned up Vortec heads and a 224 camshaft also but I guess anything is possible...hehe

the heads are good to .550 lift means that over that point more than likely the retainers will hit the guides. the afr 180 to 210 range are good heads depending on the power and rpm you are looking at. pay attention to the lift numbers under .400. the flow numbers at .500 to .600 is worthless if your cam never goes that far.

i like the comp extreme camshafts for the wider lobe seperation. generaly the wider the lobe seperation the better the vacuum signal and lower the idle. example is the pontiac and olds motors have a lot of duration but 116-118 lobe seperation and idle at 600 rpm with ease but have a lot of duration. wider the lobe seperation the less overlap the more vacuum.
get a bunch of suggestions and call the comp cams tech line. normally they recommend camshfts about 1 size too big. from my experience

if you want a cheaper way out the comp extreme 262-268 with vortec heads is a good combo. also don't overlook the trick flow heads.

tpis is a great source and are almost tpi gods for power. never be afraid to ask the experts

sorry for the horrible paragraphs. i type 1 finger and have to look at the keyboard.
