Timing cover help..

Hi. Ive got a 1987 350 Iroc and have been battling to get the timing chain cover back on. The engine is still in the car. Any tips because so far all I've got out of it is a nicked oil pan gasket and a number of bruises on me from leaning on the bonnet catch!!! Thanks.

You will probably need to loosen most if not all of the oil pan bolts and drop the pan down in order to get the flange on the back of the cover to slip inside the pan. I seriously doubt if you can exert enough pressure to compress the end gasket by pushing down on the cover from the top to allow the flange to slid in. They are meant to have the timing chain cover installed first, then the pan.

In the past I have used a pair of tin snips to trim away the corners of the metal flange to help provide a little more clearance.

Good luck,

c

you can use 3m yellow weather strip adhesive for gasket to timing cover and oil pan with black silicone for corners put bottom of cover on pan push down and work onto pins in block can be done but it does suck alittle
