some advice please

i've found an 84 z28 for really cheap they told me the trans is shot its auto it had a 305 in it but he told me it was swaped with a 350 i crawled under it and the floor isn't rusted at all any advice would help me out alot like how to tell if it is a 350 for real and if i should find another trans or rebuild the one it has and throw in a shift kit

I'd say the spark plug gaps are different from a 305 vs a 350.

350's use a gap of .045 and 305's gaps are less. Reference by removing the spark plugs and compare. I've always wondered why gaps are bigger than the 305 and went along with the recommendation to be safe.

Another way would be pulling the heads off and with a tool you measure the cylinder bore. 350 engine bores are obviously bigger than a 305 by 45.

they claim it runs and such think i should buy it for 450 bucks the interior is decent and all except around the t-tops but its optional haha he says all i'd have to do is put a tranny in it and do brakes and rotors and it would be good to go the paints kind of ****ty but im just looking for somthing i can beat these little 4 banger ricers runnin around lol

even if it is a 305 should i go for it any way the engine compartment is really clean

Cheaper to buy a low mileage "junk" trans. then rebuild one.

Look at the top rear of the motor on the driver side. You should See either 5.0 or 5.7 stamped into the block. That is the only sure way to tell, other than removing the heads and measuring the bore size.

And I second getting a $200 used tranny over having a shop rebuilding.

does this mean you're leaving the one I wanted in NE philly alone?

i couldn't get that guy to respond i had cash in hand but my buddys 84 is cheap as dirt and is floor is solid so the interior also found a 95 z28 auto 150,000 miles for 2 grand so im blanding on buying both;)
