Shake, rattle, and roll
Hey, guys...this may turn out to be a really simple question - but I wanted to get your spec on it (at the risk of looking stupid
).
When I'm driving at around 60 to 85, my car shakes pretty bad. It's pretty smooth under 60 or over 85. I had an alignment done, but it doesn't seem like it helped. The front shocks are going out, and the tranny is dying a slow and painful death...so what should I attack first to fix this problem?

One of two things is happening:
1. Your tires are out of balance. Have them checked. #1 cause of vibration
2. You have a steel driveshaft right? They are known to "deathwobble" around those speeds. Look around and get an LS1 aluminum driveshaft.
That should solve it. Other things that could cause the vibration are worn wheel bearings or bent axles. Try the 2 suggestions first though.

If your shocks are worn they too can cause this vibration. If you have many miles on the car as most do worn ball joints can contribute to vibrations. I recently overhauled my suspension front and rear and what a difference, unbelievable. I previously had the drive shaft overhauled and balanced so I knew it was OK so a suspension overhaul on my 195,000 mi Z was in order. The car handles like never before and rides nice considering it's an F-body.
