RPM stutter, car shuts off

hey guys, i recently got rid of my 95 3.4 camaro and picked up an 89 trans am two months ago. i bought the car from the 2nd owner for $1000, it only has 49k original miles on it, it's got a stock 305 tpi in it.. the only things i've done to the car is change the oil, oil filter and new air cleaner element. the cars been fine up untill the past couple weeks when i am idling the idle starts to flutter somewhere from 1k rpms down to 500.. the car feels like its about to die and usually does within 2-3 seconds... its only happened about 5-6 times and its fairly random.. it has stalled on me once when i was rolling at 5-10MPH and it was hard to get the car to stay on after multiple restart attempts(car would start and immediately die).. waited a minute and the car started up just fine.. what could this be? my dad says maybe its the TPS or somethin?

Re: RPM stutter, car shuts off

make sure the inside of you distributor cap is clean,
50k is almost time for a cap, rotor, plugs and wires

TPS in general will show up as a hesitation under part throttle condition,
they tend to wear out where you drive the most,

IAC(Idle Air control) solenoid is what controls your idle

I've seen them where they need to be cleaned,

but spark is where I would check

Re: RPM stutter, car shuts off

Check the timing, in my case, the previous owner had it waaayy to advanced and I had the exact same symptoms as you. Make sure you follow the directions on the underside of the hood of the car. You have to unplug the electric advance before you time it. If you are looking at the timing tab from the drivers side fender, the giant notch is TDC and the smaller notches closer to the passenger side are advance, and the smaller notches closer to you are retarded. Check to see where it is at with a timing light and turn the distributor accordingly to get it between 6-8 degrees. (each tooth denotes 4 degrees)

It could also be your IAC (Idle Air Control) sensor acting up. Check to make sure the wires to the sensor arent chewed up, or if the sensor seems worn out in any way.

The IAC is a control motor, not a sensor. Chances are pretty good that its not your problem. Your car can run fine (low idle) with the IAC completely closed.

Re: RPM stutter, car shuts off

Sounds like it could be an EGR valve problem as well. The EGR valve is the silver/gold round thing under the upper plenum towards the back. Put your hand in the intake and put your fingers up under the EGR valve and see if you can push it up,it should go up a little and then come back down by itself. Sometimes they can get stuck open and make the car run rough and stall as soon as you start it up unless you give it some throttle.
Theres a vacuum line going to the top of it and sometimes you can cure the problem just by taking it off and it makes the EGR valve not work, worked on my 87.

Re: RPM stutter, car shuts off

i had the same exact problem last week. 89vert is definately right, its spark related.

i would reccomend checking the distributor and all that stuff. on my car though it was the coil. it was cracked. i went to O rieleys and got a new AC delco coil and the problem was fixed. not only was it fixed but my car acually idled smoother and ran better through the whole rpm range than it did before.

Re: RPM stutter, car shuts off

thanks for all the replies guys, i'll be sure to check everything you've mentioned out.. i also forgot in my original post that occassionally (generally when the engins cold) when im cruising at 25-30MPH and goto slightly accelerate my car begins to bog,(never stalls just bogs a lil and stops) which im guessing is relatedf to the current problems i'm having..
