Putting a 3.9 V8 in a 84 Camaro can it be done? & has it been done?
hi all
i am a new member to this forum i live in the UK i have an 1984 Camaro it currently has the 2.8 V6 in it i was wanting to change it but can afford the fuel if i put in the 5.0 or 5.7 so i have opted for a 3.9 V8 from the Range Rover (it was originally in the Buick) i was wandering if some one had done it before and could they give me advice also if any one has advice on any problems i should look for in doing this venture pls reply - the other query i have is that i am going to mod the 2.8 V6 i have are there any sports components for that engine if there is pls reply on where to find

It can be done but you wont find any who have done it im afraid its just so small of a v8 that it makes it worthless. I would swap in a lt1 or a ls1 and call it a day if there a prob getting ahold of over there across the pond then i would think about getting a sbc 350 crate engine and dropping it in.

with a properly set up engine, in good running condition you cna still make good gas milage.
my 185K mile 87 IROC with the 305TPI would run 26-27mpg at 75-80mph with the auto trans (and performance rear gears).
i do beleive they make cams for the 2.8L engine...and possibly roller rockers.
check out www.jegs.com
cams

roller tip rockers

do some home porting on the heads, intake and upper plenum and you should be making a reasonable increase in power.
although it would be cool to do to a v6...the $$ spent would be better put towards a v8.

Thanks for the advice guys i was just wanna see if it had been done as it is V8 but not a big ci so the volumetric efficiency would be better equallying a greater power over distribution over more cylinders and not fuel thirsty - u guys see my point? - so do u reckon i should stay clear of this venture

if you already have the motor sitting around, a tranmission to go with it, and you have decent welding skills to fab up motor mounts, then go with it, you'll probably save money that way, but if all you are looking for is fuel economy, then you dont have to go through so much trouble

Noone is saying to stay away from it, but noone over here has done that swap, as that motor is next to none-existant over here and there are way more cost effective ways to get hp. There are probably no ready made swap parts for it, so it'll be up to you to do the fabbing. There is probably no info on that swap either. You would, however, get major unique points for a one-off swap like that.
Honestly, finding an LSx motor/6 speed and putting it in would be easier, there are ready made swap parts, it's a known quantity (it definatly fits/works). And once you get it all together you will have a 350+hp monster that can get awesome mpg.
A quick check at an online unit converter works out this way:
30 miles /U.S. gallon = 36 miles/UK gallon or
30mpg(US) = 7.84 liters/100km or
30mpg(US) = 7.92 miles/liter

Sorry to dissapoint u guys but the engine is in i had rebuilt the engine from top to bottom with alot of lightened balanced parts alot of edelbrock stuff to cut a long story short A Fast Road set up we had it on the dyno she is kickin almost 280 BHP with a top speed of 158 MPH that is before the engine is even broken in & plus we couldnt relly push it - and to let u know i aint worried about gas mileage as it will be my Sunday car ( i have another car)
Just a quick question can u get sports engine components for the 2.8 V6 as i have this one (which i have just taken out) lying around and i want to mod it - if so could u steer me in the right direction
Thanks all

Thats really nice for a 3.9L... Never seen or heard of that engine being in a fbody
Good luck with it : )
As for modding the v6 not sure what would yield the most horse power being that i've never read into it... But i would look into stage 1 or stage 2 turbo kit because its very easy to install and you will notice a very nice pick up in the v6. From there i would just go with the standard exhaust/intake mods and you would have a very nice v6 to rub in peoples face

I'm not sure what there is for the 2.8, the typical answer to that question is swap in a v8, but you've already done that . Check out the v6 board here or go over to www.thirdgen.org. That's thirdgen exclusive and I believe that the v6 section is relativly active. They should be able to point you in the right direction better than me.
EDIT: BTW, nice numbers on that new motor!! I can't remember, is that OHV or OHC?? What kind of torque, what does the dyno graph look like?? Also what RPMs are the hp and tq peaks at??
