miniram & thermostat housing?
anyone have or had problems with this area? the way mine is designed i have to put the thermostat in the housing and then try to get it onto the intake which always seems to be a hassle....terrible design. just curious if anyone else dealt with this and found a better solution.

Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
Is the housing hitting the throttlebody or the manifold itself?

Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
Do a search on here and at thirdgen.org, this is one of the many flaws of TPIS.

Buy a Stealth Ram? ;)

Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
you mean an entirely different motor.....how about a mustang crate motor?

Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
your serious aren't you...sounds good, give me the 2400 the miniram cost and i'll throw it out just to fix a thermostat problem.
:D |
Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
You wanted options. :p :)
Did you really spend $2400 on a miniram setup? |
Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
not going to go over this...
also, i'm using fastburn heads which doesn't make things any better. ;) |
Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
Sorry. :) I know what you mean about the fast burns. My friend Tony who does my tuning has a set on his 89 Vette and the miniram is pretty much his only option at the moment.
So, back to my question, is it the TB that gets in the way of the thermostat housing or the manifold itself? |
Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
more or less the problem of how it's designed. rather then letting the thermostat rest on the manifold and just put the housing over it with a simple bolt-down procedure it's the other way around which makes it difficult. you have to put the thermostat in the housind and manage to line everything up on the manifold perfect. doesn't sound bad but it's very hard to tell how you have it once it's together......just a poor design.

Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
??? huh???
I was messing around with my thermostat on the miniram just today, and I'm not having any troubles at all. I simply remove the throttle body. In addition, I'm using an early GM waterneck, though I have a TPI waterneck as a backup. I'm not sure how the water will route out of there such that the hose doesn't get tangled in the serpentine belt, but I'm getting there. Dan's miniram project The other view Those pictures are a few days old. It looks a little more complete now. |
Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
you've got the same design....must be a miracle.

Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
I am having problems with my thermostat housing neck hitting the bottom of my throttle body-is this what you are talking about? anyone else out there having this problem? any info is appreciated-
|
Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
Sounds like that's the problem. However, I have a TPIS 58mm and there is a quarter-inch of clearance from the top of the water neck to the bottom of the throttle body. Whenever I want to change the thermostat, I'll just pop off the four throttle body bolts and move it out of the way to do the job.
I'm using a shortie water neck, NOT the stock TPI waterneck. You know, now that I think of it, how come no one has called TPIS to ask which waterneck THEY recommend? Maybe it's a simple matter of the wrong combination of parts?? |
Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
TPIS knows there is a problem with the fitment, but they don't care.
Everyone I know has had to get the water neck cut and re-welded in another position to clear the throttle body and serpentine belt, including me. |

Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
i have what is basically a 45 degree from tpis....i don't have the problem with it clearance so much as just the poor design overall. i do know that tpis has two versions of the "neck" itself so you might want to check that out. i myself mainly have problems with it sealing right because of how you have to put it together having the thermostat in the housing and then lowering it down onto the intake it causes sealing problems. all they would have had to do was reverse the mount so you could set the thermostat in the manifold and drop the housing over top of it. o'well.

Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
jeff, I have had luck on housings like that by using some safety wire and an old bolt, I run the wire through the top piece of the t-stat, make a loop big enough to go out the opening in the housing, then stick the bolt through the loop and turn the bolt till the t-stat is held snug against the housing, install assm. to intake, then cut the wire and slide out of the t-stat/housing
If you need pics, I will try to get some |
Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
great idea, pretty similar to my own.....i just wish it was designed better as it's a pain.
|
Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
I had an old car, think it was a Dodge yhat assembled that way. I used a few dabs of gasket cement on the housing and glued the stat in place, then assemble on the manifold.

Re: miniram & thermostat housing?
yeah, that's pretty much what you have to do...pretty rigged setup in my opinion.
