Kills after 2 seconds

I got a 82 Camaro, the one thats in my sig FOR SALE. I got up yesterday to start it and it started and killed 2 seconds later. I checked the coil and thats ok. I checked the power wire going to the distributor and thats ok. The fuel pump is still going and the Holley pro-injection is still spraying as the engine is dying out. Im thinking the pick up is dead after 21 years. Do I need a new dist? I replaced the inside parts of it last year just cuz they looked old and the wires were cracking. What am I missing?

It is a HEI setup btw. And I didnt have a HEI coil sitting around so I used a regular coil just wired it in and got the same result

Could be the module inside the distributor. If that is the case, you definately don't need a new distributor. Also check if the teeth on the distributor are worn out while you are at it.

teeth were fine last time I pulled the strib last year to do the intake. Its getting the sparkle out to the plugs being as I took out a plug and put it on the brakes hardlines. Only thing is, it was like a sparkle of fire not a spark. It seemed a little dull to me. Not like a direct spark. I did replace the module last year but it might be that again. I also did just replace the intank pump and took out the holley inline pump cuz it seems to be locked up

Spark should be nice and bluish. Weak looking, especially yellow, is no good. Autozone will test it for you free, but heat it with a lighter or something to stress it.

the spark was a yellow one, the cap, rotor, coil, and distributor inards are all less than 2 years old and I think its always been like that. Sound like the distributor? Please say it is. Its the only thing I havent replaced on the ignition side

Try a known good coil and see if you get a blue flame.

I got a buddy at the local store so I might see if he can warranty both the coil and the electrics insdie the distributor I got from him last year

could be somthing inside the distributor!

I'm assuming the cap and rotor are good, right?

94FlamdS10Blazr 04-28-2003 11:30 AM

Im hoping it is, all parts are Accel about 1 1/2- 2 yrs old. Im about to replace them all. Its got to be something electrical in the dist. Last night I tried to crank it and I couldnt even get fire

platnum78 04-28-2003 12:26 PM

accel

I would not trust accel. I bought their coil had it a year and actually just last week it went. I replaced it with a stock one.

i had the same problem a while back after putting in the new 355.

its the pick-up coil inside the distributor, at napa its like $24, you have to take off the rotor, the modual, and take off the teeth on the bottom, then take out the rest of the crap, then the mini pick-up coil thats inside the distributor. replace it and you should be fine.

good luck
Shean

thank you finally a good answer I can believe!

94FlamdS10Blazr 04-28-2003 10:26 PM

i think its going to be the pick ip coil. It was falling apart on me. It was $18 and pretty easy to swap. I just gotta put in the pin on the gear and drop the distributor back in, time it and go. So I guess its back up for sale
