how can i lower my ET-1/4 time?

so i went to the strip today and ran the car for the first time ever.. well it did aswell as i thought it would.. first run was 17sumthing and then high 16 then down to mid 16s. i got about 20runs in and my best was 16.103 at 84.79mph. the dogleg rearend is killing me.. but anyways my question is, is there anything i can do to go a little bit faster?. i know this car can hit high 15s.. can i mess with the timing?..if so how much?. im not tryin to spend anymoney right now. just wanna get atleast one 15sec 1/4

i was running about 15psi in the tires. i might try the 275/60/15s i have

my mods are(305 with 700r tranny)
flowmaster(no cat), stock headers
proflow air cleaner

i was also running with my amp and 2 12s(in box) + full intoer

get a new rearend would be the first thing...get 3.73's and a little stall converter and you could probably knock a second off that...

Their you have , it your 12's and amp ,and whatever other audio helping bits you may have (sound deadening dyanmat or the like) is going to cost you at the strip , also try advancing timing a bit , and see how that works.

Re: how can i lower my ET-1/4 time?

i believe you can just take the posi and gears out of a posi equipped thirdgen along with the axles....or just find a whole rearend and swap it in...you can find them anywhere between 100-200 bucks I believe...that would be my first move...

also that wieght is probably killing you...every 100 pounds is worth a tenth in the quarter, remember that...

also have you done the free mods? there is a whole list of them over at thirdgen.org..

Advance timing to 12* BTDC or more if you are brave (You are in Bradenton right? I wouldn't try any more in this weather). Remove as much weight as you can. Carpet, seats, charcoal canister, move battery to the rear. Run with no air filter. Put a bag of ice on top of the intake manifold before racing. Also, remove all exhaust components from the exhaust manifolds back. Borrow someones slicks . That should be cheap, and work well.

i just swap map sensers with my friends 88 t/a(has the same 305 carb tranny everything) and it seem to be alot quicker.. my uncle owns a junkyard(work there on weekends sumtimes) and he has one those tester thingys and it was throwing all kinds of dumb codes.. one was the map senser, another the intake(b/c i dont have a stock intake) and couple of other ones we couldnt find out what it was

Re: how can i lower my ET-1/4 time?

i would not recommend running with no filter, and I would not recommend running slicks on a stock drivetrain...those two are just stupid...

http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/

look through there...didnt' have time to look for the exact page that had a list of all the free mods..but theres some useful info in that link.

Re: how can i lower my ET-1/4 time?

After I talked about removing the seat, the rest of the post I was half kidding, but I don't see how running slicks on a mostly stock 305 will destroy a stock drivetrain.

I read the charcoal canister thread. I believe it was basically decided that removing it on a TPI engine wouldn't hurt it.

Also, though removing your air filter will not really give you any noticable gains, it will also not kill your engine for one 1/4 mile pass.

Re: how can i lower my ET-1/4 time?

for starters you have to ditch those tires they are way too tall and are killing your gear, spend 75.00 on pulleys,130.00 on hooker shorties and 75.00 on a 2.5'' y-pipe.your set up will allow the use of sticky tires without any problems be sure your u-joints are good...i sprayed 100 shot on a mildly modded 5spd tpi 305 w/3.73s for a looong time w/m&h racemasters stock it had 235hp 300ft-lbs go for it....
