Which gears are considered "performance"?

Its not the 3.23 is it?

Here is what I have:

GU5 : AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
G80 : AXLE POSITRACTION, LIMITED SLIP
G92 : AXLE REAR RATIO, PERFORMANCE

What does the G92 do to the GU5? Can you have a GU5 and not a G92?

I wouldnt mind having 2.73 actually. Would love to lower the rpms on the highway. Then maybe put the 3.23 in my truck (GU6, 3.42 currently).

a lot of guys would kill for a L98 G92 car...

yes the 3.23's were the performance gears for L98 cars...
the G92 option on the Lb9 g92 cars got 3.42 gears...and as much as people hate to admit or accept these 2 cars were very close in performance

Say that again....?
What's LB9?
The G92 option on the G92 cars got 3.42 gears... So G92 adds GU6 option?

Well you do have some choice RPO's on your car. Can't do better if I ordered that car my self. Just to bad its not a BW 9-bolt.

Note: What your RPO are is what on the car unless its was swapped out by previous owner.

Well you learn something new everyday for you:

RPO LB9 is the 305 TPI engine option. which you do not have.

Nm im an idiot, 305

So you are saying a 305 5 speed with 3.42 gears will outrun (or even keep up) with a 350 auto 3.23?

For the 1/8th mile, I would think but I'm not sure about the quarter because there is a longer path for the 350 to come out. Just a hunch.

Still interesting indeed.

Though it makes it much harder to burn around corners with positrac. Very easy in an open differential (like my truck).

Yes but you are burning one tire.

Besides, going round corners, the slower wheel breaks free from posi otherwise you would have difficulty cornering like drag cars with a spool.

To shed some light on this subject, when I first got my car about 3 years ago, I was out cruising with a friend when I ran into an '89 GTA TA with an L98, cold air intake setup and K&N's. My car is an '87 IROC with an LB9, 5spd, 3.45 rear (which has been replaced by 3.73s now), K&N filters, and a Flowmaster muffler. First we were hauling *** around twisty roads, apparently the other driver thought I wouldn't be able to handle them. It probly didn't make him very happy that I almost stuck to him like glue because we then made it to a long straightaway where he proceeded at WOT. Having a hunch that he was gonna do that, I had already grabbed 2nd in anticipation and when we took off, I was roughly a car length directly behind him and he never gained any (or lost any) ground until we had to shut it down near about 100mph because of a 3 way stop approaching. I guess another thing to consider is that IROCs and GTAs with the L98 are somewhat heavier. I think GTAs are even a bit heavier than the L98 IROCs because of all the extra options.

Just my .02

I'm confussed. My standard state. What year/s are you all talking about. In 84 the Performance Ratio was 3:73.

when the L98 made its debut in '87 (actually there were a very small availability of '86 cars, about 75 or less that had the L98, but rumors suggest they were only for testing purposes), the performance ratio was 3.27s in a 9-bolt rear (9 bolts were used from '87 to '89).

Then from '90-'92 GM stopped importing the 9-bolts from Australia and equipped the f-bodys with 10-bolt rears. 3.23s became the performance ratio in the 10-bolts with an L98.

When talking about the LB9 V8, things get a little confusing. The performance ratio was 3.45s in the 9-bolt rears and 3.42s in the 10-bolts. But, (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) to get that performance rear, you also had to specify the T5 manual transmission. In addition, when the T5 and LB9 were specified, the motor also received the L98 cam, which obviously allowed the LB9 to realize additional ponies.

If the LB9 was had with the 700R4 auto, it didn't get the L98 cam (which made it produce less power), and the 'performance' ratio was 3.23s for the 9-bolts and 3.08s for the 10-bolts. The standard rear for the LB9 was 2.73s.

Hope this helps

Hmmm, so I guess from a "classic" standpoint, having the biggest motor and most options are nice...

But man, it sure would be nice to have a 5 speed... would make it easier to convert to t56

Yeah, unfortunately the T5 just about takes the abuse the LB9s dish out and would take a dirt nap if bolted to an L98. If you ever decide to convert, ur definately better off with a T56. There's actually an article floating around that describes the whole process (if you don't already have it). I think I have it saved as an html document (unfortunately, I don't have the address.

BTW, what do you get for gas mileage with ur car?, I heard that the L98's weren't the greatest due to the tranny ratios and shift points.
