Gas Getting Into Crankcase
Gas Getting Into Crankcase
A couple months ago I decided to “resurrect” my son’s 1989 CAMARO R/S 305 TBI with 125,000 miles that has been parked in my maintenance garage since 2004. First I wanted to be certain the pistons weren’t stuck so I briefly spun the engine using the starter. It turned over just fine so I supposed they were free. Next, knowing the fuel tank was probably all gummed up I dropped it and discovered it was a total loss so I replaced the fuel tank, sending unit, fuel pump, fuel filter and both throttle body fuel injectors. I then replaced all eight spark plugs and changed the oil and filter before attempting to start the engine. After spinning the engine a few times to my surprise it fired up and as long as I kept the RPMs at 1500 to 2000 it continued to run rather smoothly. However after about a minute or two I began smelling gas and smoke began coming up from around the engine so I immediately turned off the engine. When I looked under the car there was a large puddle of a gas-oil mixture on the floor and the engine appeared to have this mixture sprayed all over the block. I then drained the oil. I put 5 quarts of oil in when I changed it but drained out 7 quarts. That’s about a half gallon of gas dumped into the crank case in less than two minutes. The engine was running fairy smoothly at the 1500 to 2000 RPS before I shut it off so my question is,is this a fuel delivery problem or an engine problem? Which ever, would you guys have any suggestions apart from a new engine?
Thank you all in advance for any ad all help you can give.
