Angry continued problems with temp.

I posted a week or so ago about antifreeze on the floorboard. Dropped some stop-leak in the radiator, no more problems with leaking coolant. My A/C, however, is still giving me troubles. I don't smell antifreeze anymore when I turn on the A/C, but the car still runs hot when it's on. The car will normally run where it's supposed to, around 180 or so, it MAY get to 220 when it's unbearably hot, as it has been this year. However, after running the A/C for 10-15 minutes, the car's temp. quickly reaches the red area of the thermostat (250 or whatever it is). The first time it happened, I was nearly home so I gently but hurriedly returned home and shut off the car. All the coolant boiled away, and I had to refill it with water, for the time being. Does it make a difference, having water instead of antifreeze? If that's not the problem, any suggestions on what would make my car overheat when the air is on?

Well the AC puts an extra load on the car which would make it run hotter but when the AC is turned on it should also turn on the fan to keep it cool. Are your fans turning on at all? Also that stop leak may have clogged up something else. Have you flushed your system lately or checked to see if the thermostat is working properly. That could be another idea.

i have the same problem. i own an 86 t/a and the reason it overheates is when the ac takes the coolent from the motor the fan cant keep it cool. the front end is too closed off. no air from the highway can get in and the fan just isnt powerful enough. im still workin on how to fix that.

Yes, it makes a difference. The water is what carries away the heat, but the antifreeze and the radiator pressure cap are what raise the boiling point of the solution. The antifreeze also has rust inhibitors in it to reduce rust formation, so don't leave the water in there alone too long.

The AC takes coolant from the motor?

I know my car without the ac will usually run around 180 or so also. When I turn the a/c (this was also tested when it was 111 here in North Dakota last week) the temp will start to rise to 220. I believe I read somewhere that the fans don't turn on till right about 220. So, the temp DOES get a little above 220 but since the fan does turn on it goes back down. Check your fan AND your fan clutch. I had to replace my fan clutch after I bought it.

1 Your radiator might be clogged, take it out and soak it in Lime away and water overnight.
2 your spoiler (under the chin, mounts to the bottom of the radiator core support) is bent back or missing. If it is bent back, drill some holes and safety wire it to the jacking points in front of it to pull it back vertical or slightly forward.
3you have trash stuck between your engine and AC radiator.
4your fans are not turning on when the AC is turned on. They should.

Good luck.

Yo u can try getting a 180 or 160 degree thermostat for your car. I prefer 160 though. It will help keep the temp down.
