*insert evil laugh here* I got it
So line up the dots, put the chain on, then put it back together and pray to the High and Mighty that was the problem?

No. Well, kinda (lol). The guy that was helping me, is now being a complete DICK! He put the freakin' thing in wrong (he used the stock-looking key-way) and I told him it was wrong. He got mad. I ended up working on it at 9pm night w/ my g/f's company. I put the crank-pulley puller on, and I forgot that bushing that goes in to protect the threads. Well anyways I am REALLY cranking on this thing, putting my weight into it and everything. Well, it doesn't come out so I got tell Jim. He comes out all pissed off, takes the puller off, says "where the f*ck is the bushing? Now your cranks f*cked and you need a new one!". I mashed in the first 3 or 4 levels of threading.
Well, is my crank cast-iron like I think it is? Is it possible to re-tap it? I have heard yes, and I have heard no. Any input?
Oh ya, the car is being towed to my house tomorow so I can do whatever the hell I want on it, WHEN i want!

Oh no man that royally sucks. You should be able to tap the threads. Hopefully you can save them. If not maybe heli coil it back to the proper size.

G-luck

Well when I did my 1st rebuild on a 85 305 mine wouldn`t start because the rockers were to tight and it was doin what you said yours were doing So if your car doesn`t start after you get it togher try losening the rockers because your valves might be hung open like mine where. as soon as I losened all the rockers off it ran like a top , oh and I used the same timing chain as you and used the middle key way.

p.s NEVER follow instuctions that come with a new crane cam because there wrong I found out the hard way

Man you are making me feel a lot better about this whole thing My friend today tells me that he couldn't tap it using his carbide taps; then again he is weak. I am, not to brag, a bit on the strong side so I think if I put my mind and muscle to it I *may* be able to get it going again. Jim (my bud) also said someting about the heli-coil (pronounced Heal-A right?). So I may have to give that a try.

Ya I am pretty sure mine wouldnt start because there was a total of 8* crank timing But it is together for the most part; i just have to get the crank re-tapped and slap the harmonic balancer back on
Thank you for the help though

Do you think a heli-coil would be durable enough and do you think it would fit in the crank?

A heli-coil should be fine as long as you can tap those threads for it. Which shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure your tap is straight as an arrow. Also be VERY patient, let us know how it goes

Look at that for a guide. You'll have to put some muscle into it probably. Use plenty of lube and make sure you pull it out and clean it ever couple turns.

So technicall, the ONLY thing that would possibly hold me back from tapping this crank would be how much pressure I can apply to the tap, right? Should I use WD40 for lube or what?

Re: Car wont start.. makes a dry exhaust noise, doens't sound gassy

Oh ya.. btw I went to try cranking it earlier It at least *sounds* like it wants to start now. It's got that sound.. that "gassy" type sound to it? It doesn't sound like somebody blowing thru a pipe anymore, lol. All I'm gonna do now is put it together, pour fuel down the carb. If that doesn't work, then I am gonna adjust the timing

Re: Car wont start.. makes a dry exhaust noise, doens't sound gassy

Ya PB Blaster is GREAT.. but also expensive from what i recall. (My dad uses that stuff).
Ok.. i was looking at it today, the first prolly 4 or 5 lines worth of threading are FLAT. There is NOTHING to bite into.
What do I do? I am really panicking that I may need a new crank
How do you use a heli-coil??
