Which cam on '83 305?

Hi, i was wondering which cam would be best to replace the stock cam in an '83 Z-28 with an auto 305. It has a crossfire (i know its not great, but its what i have to work with right now) engine with 50xxx on it. I was thinking about a crane cam, could someone tell me what kind of lifters i would need to get?

Also, how hard is it to swap out a cam? Can you swap it without taking out the engine?

thanks

Have you done any other mods? Since the induction system sucks ass, the heads suck, the exhaust manifolds suck, and the exhaust sucks, you're going to need to stick with a mild cam. I'd stick with something similar to the L69 cam, which is around a 202/206 duration grind with lift somewhere in the low .4xx range.

I suppose you could if you removed the radiator and maybe the front nose piece to give you more clearance to work but if you are going that far, change the timing gear and oil pump while you are at it.

You can swap it without pulling the engine, the radiator needs to come out is all (i have done 2 cam swaps with my motor in the car).

You need to sell the CFI on ebay and put a carb and carb intake on the car. You will notice larger gains doing that than anything you could do with the CFI on. Also, CFI will limit how aggressive you can go with camshaft selection.

cam

I have hedman long tube headers and a ported intake manifold. Does this change which cam i should go with?

Also, people have told me that if i change to a more aggressive cam, my computer (i have a hypertec chip) will not be able to keep up and get confused. Is this true?

My exhaust is hedman long tube headers with 3in. y-pipe (thinking about going dual) and no cat or mufflers.

i'd get the ram jet cam, is only 4135 and the liftis .431/.451

Don't know what that hypertech chip will do. In any case, why don't you decide which way you want to go then get someone to burn the chip to be custom for your car.

The chip will get confused. I suppose it can be put that way. THe car will still function if you put in a big cam, and you will most likely even notice gains. However your car wont reach its full potential until you have the chip to match the cam and any other mods.

That tbi computer is so stupid that I'm sure it's already confused with the mods you've done. A new cam sure isn't going to help that situation, so you won't get optimal performance... but the new cam will still result in more power assuming the POS intake is capable of flowing enough air, which isn't likey.

I'd seriously consider an intake and carb. Hit ebay and you can probably get a used Weiand or Edelbrock base and a quadrajet 750 for the same price as a new cam.

changing to carb

how hard is it to change a crossfire setup to a carb? Will you have to get a special intake manifold because of the daul throttle bodies?
If anyone knows which parts I would need that would be helpful.

Also, could you list specifit cam #'s that would work well?

thanks

That's a roller cam and won't work in his 83 LG4.

Kbog,

If you follow the parts I used in my sig, you will get a 305 that can do mid-14s with ease and get excellent mileage, to boot :D
