92 Camaro RS cranks even with key removed!

Hello, I am new to the forum and I have been reading a lot. However I知 not seeing anything that resembles what I知 dealing with. I have a 92 RS with the 305 TBI automatic. I have replaced the starter, battery, relay and checked the wiring under the dash. My problem is that when I connect the battery, the car will begin to turn over without the key. I have went under the car and disconnected the purple ignition wire from the starter and ran my own wire up to the battery. I hooked the battery back up, turn the key to the on position and used the wire to manually start the car, however the motor kept cranking over still. Also, it is turning over very slowly. Tomorrow I plan on going through all of the engine bay wires to look for shorts or burnt wires. Is there anything that stands out to anyone?

Is there any possibility that that starter wires are mixed up or touching each other?

The purple wire is connected to the small terminal on the starter and then the battery cable along with 2 other wires are bolted to the large terminal of the starter.

That sounds consistent with what is posted here: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/carb...g-diagram.html

I would trace back all of the wires for possible shorts.

I知 not sure I知 seeing where they are talking about what I知 experiencing. All I see is someone asking how to look up a starter.

I only referenced it because the way their starter is connected, matches what you have described. I suggest checking all of the wires for short to ground that are part of the starting system.

Ok that explains it. Yeah I am currently in the process of inspecting the harness. So far everything looks good except a pink wire near the firewall was spliced into and that wire ran back to the electric fan but that wire also was spliced off of by the battery and goes back up into the wire harness that seams to go up to the ECM on the passenger side. I disconnected the spliced wire all together and haven稚 had the issue of the car trying to start on its own, but I知 still dealing with a very slow crank when trying to start. Have checked the starter and it痴 in perfect shape and past the test at the auto store, changed coil, relay and battery. Still scratching my head.

That's a step forward. Have you verified the CCA on the battery and its voltage while cranking?

Yeah I took the new battery in with the starter and had them both checked. Battery shows good but was only 60% charged. I知 charging it now. The CCA on the battery is 690.

See how it goes when it's charged, but I bet you'll be okay.

Fingers crossed. I知 hoping that will do it.

Just put the battery in after charging all night and still cranking extremely slow. If it were the VATs the car wouldn稚 turn over at all right?

VATS shuts off fuel and interrupts the starter circuit, so the starter cannot engage/crank.

What else would cause the slow crank? I知 at a loss now. Might have to swallow my pride and take it to a mechanic to go through it.

If the CCA's on the battery are good, it could be a weak starter or damaged wiring.
