383 computer chip, help please!
 

I had a 383 built to put in my 1986 Trans Am. I have the 24lb injectors from Accel, adj. fuel pressure regulator, 180 degree thermostat, i am having no luck finding a computer chip. I emailed hypertech about their thermo master, they said that their chips are built around stock configurations. Can I just use a 350 chip, and let the mass air and other sensors adjust for the added displacement. Custom chip?? There was not a 350 offered in 1986, but in 1987 i believe the 350 5.7 liter was an option. Should i use this chip??

Do not know what to do, I want to get this finished but i dont want to make a mistake with the brains to keep the motor running.

if the cam isnt that big,then try running it w/ a 87+ 350 chip. but if u have the time and money,it really needs a custom chip...which really needs to be done anyway to get all the HP/TQ outta the motor that u can.

It depends on what mods you made to the motor, what did you do?

The stock 350 chip will be ok. Use the afpr to turn down the pressure. You will need a scanner or some data logging to find out what the car is doing, without data, you are in the dark. Do this first. The car will run with the stock chip.

i used the 87 350 chip for my 383. i used 24# accel injectors also. do not turn the pressure down. that will lean it out more. i had to set mine to 55# just to get it close. then had to add 5% fuel enrichement to get the low mid range correct. then play with the upper rpms in increments until the whole fuel curve was dialed in. oh and i had an 86 TA also.

but other things will come into play. heads, cam, intake, etc.

www.fasterproms.com will be able to help you out. You tell them what you got and they will burn you a chip to those specs. When you call them, ask to borrow their Diacom if you have a laptop. Withy that, you install their chip, make some runs and email them the results and they will send you another chip. This process repeats till you chip is dialed in. Just like dyno tuning except you use the road as your dyno.

This process will make you a truely custom chip not something that came off the shelf like Hypertech or Superchips.
