2 piece timing cover? which one?

any one have any thoughts on the 2 piece timing covers? I want to get one that works good and doesnt leak...which one do I get

also, seeing that I have a retro fit cam that does not have the lip on the front edge of the cam and I will be needing a cam button and thrust plate I think...
do I need to get a certain style timing cover? ive read that certain ones dont work with different cams..

am I right?

thanks!

I personally like this style.: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Whether it leaks or not is more a function of the installer then the part.

That is exactly like the one from comp for 200+ bucks. I have the comp cams one and I had to grind on the power steering/alternator bracket to get the thing to fit. If you don't then you can't install one or the other.

They also don't give you a gasket for the outer cover to inner cover, so you will have to cut and paste a second gasket or use rtv. The gasket shown is for the cover to block only. The outer cover to inner cover is a funny shape, so you will have to hack up a second gasket to make all the pieces fit.

Summit just copied the comp one for $50 less bucks. Looks like the same piece to me, with all the same bolts and all, but comp doesn't give you the cam locking plate, roller button, cam bolts or that string in the picture.

cool piece but damn!..they make it sound like a pain to install...doesnt it just go on like a normal cover?..is it really that hard to install?

with that work with a OEM style long water pump?

and about the powering steering bracket....did you use the stock piece of an aftermarket bracket?

Re: 2 piece timing cover? which one?

It goes on like a stocker, you just have to grind on the bracket with a dremel or die grinder. My water pump is edelbrock, bracket is stock.

The only way for you to find out if it fits is to bolt it all up and see, then grind where you need to to get it all to fit. Nothing ever fits my car when I buy it, so I'm used to it. The edelbrock water pump didn't fit either, I had to grind on the water pump and the a/c compressor bracket and power steering pump brackets to make it fit.:(

Re: 2 piece timing cover? which one?

Ive got an Edelbrock polished water pump..so I hope that fits...Ive also got the V-belt type setup and will only be using the Alt and the power steering...so Im going with aftermarket brackets for them ..so everything should fit...I hope?!

is the cam button and locking plate hard to install?

Then I got completely hosed on buying the comp cover. The summit one looks exactly the same and they give you all the parts needed for $50 less bucks.

I just ordered the summit timing cover...now, I have the polished aluminum edelbrock long style water pump..when you say you had to grind on your water pump, why did you have to? did it not fit? where?

thanks

Re: 2 piece timing cover? which one?

The water pump is too fat. I had to grind on the alternator and a/c brackets for more clearance. You may or may not have a problem, the only way to tell is to bolt it together and see.

THis one is about 1/3 the price of that other one.

hey? for those of you with a COMP or SUmmit 2 piece timing cover since they are the same. Did you put RTV on the cover peice? I didnt and just left it dry with the O-ring type gasket........should I take it back off and put the THIN layer of RTV like it says to?

I got in a hurry and put it on and bolted the water pump, balancer and all....and then was like,

Z28SORR 01-23-2007 03:15 PM

JMO. I never use RTV on flat gaskets, just at the corners. And never, never on an O-ring, period. O-rings should be lub'ed with light oil and that's all.

Wishmaster 01-23-2007 07:57 PM

its not a flat gasket...its a small o-ring type...

here it is, you can see the black ring going around the cover

http://s147.photobucket.com/albums/r...t=DSC02067.jpg

so you say I should just leave it?

IROC-T 01-23-2007 08:57 PM

NEVER use gasket sealer of any type with an O-ring. A little lube is all they need, if they may twist when tightening down. If it is a flat plate to plate (as with the cover) you shouldn't need to worry about lube, just keep the surfaces clean and dry while assembly.
