1979 Camaro Engine/tranny swap

Hi I have a 2000 454 7.4L than I am going to put into my 79 camaro. My main concern is the transmission I wanted to know if a 4L60e would bolt up and fit under the car, and is there anything else that i would have to change like the drive shaft or any gears at all?

The transmission will fit in just fine. You have to move the crossmember back a little. Hurst make a very nice console shifter for that application. Sounds absolutely awesome.

The driveshaft has to be shorter but i think a s10 driveshaft is the correct length but i forgot which model.

How do you plan to shift the 4L60E? It requires input from a computer.

This could be a lost cause thread. I don't see it ending well... help, it even started in the wrong forum. Haha

Hopefully he has a 700r4/4l60 tv cable controlled trans, not a 4L60E..

B&M makes a pro stick shifter that is nice and you can buy the 4 speed optional gate plate so it works well with a Gm 4 speed automatic.

??why??

4L60E conversions aren't unheard of.

Heck, If it were me, I'd string in some new hard line, roll a fuel pump into the tank, then port fuel inject that 454 and use a FAST XFI controller & distributor to convert the whole thing to sequential EFI, then actuate the 4L60E with the XFI. That'd really make the '79 one heck of a modern ride. Probably get the same fuel mileage as the original 350 and have triple the power.

He has one post and a 2 month gap in the thread, that's why I said it was a lost cause.. haha

I would think a 2000 model 454 is injected and has a computer controlled tranny. A complete drivetrain swap would be interesting.

Ah, I wasn't looking at the dates nor the post count - I now see what you mean! Personally I prefer the look of a 1980/1981 Z28 with the functional cowl induction. The '78/79 models, though super popular, just never had the same curb appeal to me. I used to have a '77 Camaro LT. I liked them all, from the '67 through the 1977 models, then when I saw the 1980 Z28 in white, I was all over that car again. Then, with the quasar blue 1985 IROC Z28, and the white 1985 IROC Z28, I again felt that Chevy had really hit on a great overall design.

If I had a big pole barn somewhere, I'd probably go looking for a rust-free '80 and leisurely do it up with a modern powertrain out of a truck. A supercharged LS3 with gobs of torque would be great for the big, heavy street-going F-body... Though amazingly, the second-gens probably weigh the same or even less than the new gen5's.
