NEWS: Watch a COPO Camaro in the 8s out of the box

If this YouTube video is to be believed, then Chevrolet definitely did not forget to put the FAST in the COPO Camaro. Car number three and its 327-cubic-inch engine topped with the 4.0-liter blower ran what looks like an 8.88-second quarter-mile at the strip, out of the box.

That puts it at the pointy end of the three-way competition between it, the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet and the Mopar Challenger Drag Pak. Ford has said the Cobra Jet will run in under 10 seconds, while the Challenger Drag Pak did a 9.43 out of the box last year. We're sure this is just the beginning of what will be a long, and very loud, rivalry. Have a look at the video below to see the latest round.Continue reading Watch a COPO Camaro in the 8s out of the box

Why not sell it with the 6.2 and a blower?

Other then that, hey look what happens when you get rid of 700lbs of weight.

I'm not familiar with the current class rules, but more than likely there is displacement limit when you run a blower.

It has been over 10 years since I worked at an IHRA track and IHRA and NHRA rules differ and also though I was an Official I never worked tech inspection by myself so take this with a grain of Salt.

On a Friday Mid night madness there were basically two classes. Super Street and Pro Street. The difference between the two is how fast you are. If I remember correctly it hinged at the 13.99 mark depending on what you dialed in.

Super Street - Slower than 13.99
Pro Street - Faster than 13.99

Faster than 13.99 and you needed a helmet so it was easy to check the drivers to enforce helmet rules. Everyone in Pro Street needed a helmet and could not have a rider.

Faster than 9 seconds and you needed an IHRA licensee. You had to run 3 passes by yourself with an IHRA official watching you to make sure basically you could handle it.

I forget at what point you need a full point roll cage.

No displacement requirements that I remember for those two classes on midnight madness. Did not care how you got the time rather moreso what times you ran and were you a car or a bike.

On Sat and Sun I think we ran different classes. I thought it was Super Stock and Pro Stock but its been so long I dont remember. Sat and Sun drivers were much better, and the purse for them was a little higher.

I found these links on IHRA and NHRA classes. Looking at the requirements.
