GM pushing "gay" Camaro

http://blogs.moneycentral.msn.com/to...o-gay-men.aspx

Not sure this will help overall sales.

I wonder how the average Camaro owner/enthusiast will feel about this association.

JakeRobb 07-08-2009 02:03 PM

Interesting. :)

I am wondering if the quotes from Fitzpatrick were not taken out of context and then applied to the article as what he said can apply to just about anything. Maybe...considering that the video was clearly not "official" or made by GM. The whole thing doesn't seem like how it is being presented.

I am an "average Camaro owner" and the bottom line is that since I am not gay, I don't care and it does not apply to me. I am not a woman so feminine products also do not apply to me in the same manner. I don't think of literal gay references when I think of Camaro (or any other vehicle) and other situations like what what was presented in that article, I cannot find a clear association between human homosexuality and an inanimate object.

GM should be doing everything they can to sell every car in their inventory regardless of who it's sold to. They are bankrupt and just flat out lucky that the Camaro is selling as well as it is because it's certainly not a car made for the masses. So if certain groups like the car enough to promote it with a little help from GM then by all means let them do it.

Besides one of the stereotypes of the homosexual group is that they have an eye for style and it's flattering that the Camaro has drawn their interest. The Camaro has never had any problem selling to guys and enthusiasts but it's the other groups, women and all that if it can appeal to will really make this car a hit and help GM the most.

QFT. If anything, GM needs as much help dis-associating itself with the 'mullet' stigma as they can get. If that means anyone other than rednecks like myself like it, especially a group that would typically be associated with style and possibly more brand 'aware' than most, than good for GM.

I think the author is doing more to push the 'gay' Camaro agenda more than GM.

I don't see why you would want to tie any car to a sexuality... or gender, race, age, etc. It only serves to narrow your customer base. Market it as what it is and let people on an individual basis decide if they are drawn to it or not.

NEWS: FOLLOWUP: GM orders YouTube to remove "tasteless" gay Camaro promo video?

Filed under: Coupes, Sports/GTs, Marketing/Advertising, Chevrolet, GM, Lifestyle

Yesterday, not long after we posted a story about a gay-centered General Motors marketing video for Chevrolet's new Camaro, the video was mysteriously pulled from YouTube. As it turns out, GM itself has copped to the disappearing act, as it reportedly ordered the popular video hosting site to yank the footage.

According to a USA Today article, GM spokesman Dave Barthmuss felt that the video - which featured a pair of so-called 'go go boys in Camaro-branded underwear washing a new 2010 model - was "not appropriate and not in good taste." The footage was filmed as part of a Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen gay day promotion at a Hollywood movie theater.

Despite pulling the video, GM has reportedly launched a more concerted campaign to broaden the scope of its marketing efforts as it applies to the Camaro, with more overt efforts to target gays, bisexuals, and the transgendered. It is not immediately clear what (if any) effect pulling the footage will have on the rest of the automaker's p.r. efforts.

Good decision GM! :thumb: on the above post (#8). I wonder if we would be having this discusson if it were a women in the vid aimed at heterosexuals. Either way it is sinful....... Besides this car needs nothing to attract attention, in fact if there were a half dressed women on the car I'd push her out of the way to look at the car :) And no, I don't support people choosing to live a homosexual lifestyle.

Damn and here I was hoping to soon be able to purchase a magenta colored Camaro....

j/k :p

Chrisz24 07-10-2009 10:17 PM

The new Camaro is a much more sporty all around vehicle then any previous Camaro and definately appeals to many more then the hard core 1 focus previous generations.

With that said- As a gay man, I know many gay car guys who love muscle cars! They do exist and many of us are gear heads.:) This car seems like a home run for Chevrolet so I wish them luck selling it!

The husband/ wife and 2.5 kids doesnt apply to that many, especially considering gay men (unfortunately not me) typically have alot of disposable income.

Funny this has been brought up, because this was a discussion on the M3forums.

Only one response came up for the article (below), but you guys have to read this rest of the thread its titled "M3 and the new camaro SS" these Bimmer boys are quite arrogant in a funny way, but this was the first time in a long time (besides mercedes) that another car was being compared to in the M3 forums.

I think from a marketing stand-point that is a really bad move. The demographic who is buying a camaro ss are typically: Male. 18-54. Heterosexual.
IMO, GM will not sell enough of these to the "gay market" to make up for the the amount of heterosexual men that won't buy a car that has a "gay connotation". Horrible PR decision. Know your target audience. No wonder they are Bankrupt.

Good find!

I dont agree with thier opinion on the materials from what little Ive felt. Some fair gripes tho but youre right, that its even being compared is a good sign. The Mustang they were probably refering to that beat Camaro in comparison test is the track pack Mustang. Im dying to hear how the camaro would stack up with pedders suspension :P cough cough Jason some feed back please!

BTW if this was a real marketing campaign for GMs hottest car, where years of sports car marketing/movies was suggestive that the car will help you get girls... lol eh, what were they thinking?

The General, hoping to ring up a few extra sales, tacitly supports some gay Camaro fan-boys who make videos featuring their favorite car. The result: collapse of civilization!

The story itself, which showed up on MSN's MoneyBlog last week, is kind of a snore (and the videos that started all the hooraw have since been axed), but some of the comments are pure, stereotype-reinforcing gold. It all reminds me of the days when I wrote Camaro catalog copy for a certain musclecar parts supplier and we'd get enraged letters from customers claiming that we were spelling "Camero" (sic) incorrectly on their new emblems, horn buttons, and door panels. Let's read some of the highlights and reflect on the price that owners of all stereotype-weighted vehicles- be they Camaros, Miatas, Priuses, or Porsches- must pay for the love of their machines. Thanks to Craig for the tip!
hahahah....saw this down in the comments...:lol::lol::lol::kekeke:
