John Schinella created the first black and gold (John Player Special colors) Trans Am for Bill Mitchell in 1973. It was later updated with 74 and eventually 76 noses. After the change to the '76 nose it became the prototype for the 50th Anniversary (of Pontiac) 1976 Trans Am. That was the first production black and gold. It was so popular it continued into 1977 and beyond.
The production company of Smokey and the Bandit did get some of the first cars with the 1977 nose ('76s were still on the lots at the time of filming) so the car would be "current" when the movie came out, but the Y81 and Y82 Special Editions were already planned based on the success of the 50th Anniversary model when Smokey and the Bandit was being filmed.
Pontiac never did an official Bandit package, but Trans Am specialties did officially license the "Bandit" name in 1981 for their 455 transplant tuner T/As.

Do you mean the paint scheme or the "Bandit" package? The black and gold paint scheme predates Smokey and the Bandit.

Hey, look at my username and the car I own - there's very little I haven't researched about the 1977 Trans Am. Not too much about the classic F Bodies comes up around here anymore, so when it does, I just have to be lame about it . Have to!

Not to mention, you are not buying just stripes and badges...you are also buying the ownership (and bragging rights) to a limited edition car. To some, that is worth something. The 25th, 30th, 35th Camaros were mostly just stripes and badges as well.

I can absolutely attest that the words "There's Bumblebee!" are repeatidly heard on the auto show circuit. It doesn't matter what color the display car is...
It isn't my kind of thing, but I do know that not offering something to cater to that equity would be ignoring a buyer that is definately out there.

1000 dollars for a limited production car? sounds like a good deal to me. for the people who think its overpriced, what price would be a reasonable price,to you, for this car? and act like you are the company selling this limited production item. and remember.......you have to make money. because that is the whole point of doing business right?

Problem is...
Money and engineering time at GM was spent on this.
If it pays off and GM turns a profit on it, then that's a good thing.
That being said, BNG (Bold, New Graphics) work ONCE, maybe TWICE... then ya gotta actually, you know, improve the car.
I'm not worked up about it, but let's not make BNG packages a habit again.
The next Chevrolet Special Edition Camaro needs to actually be SPECIAL.
Finally, note one other thing... the truly famous Camaros? The first Z28's and the mighty COPOs and ZL-1's. A car's reputation for decades can be made off those.
BNG's like the Anniversary cars? Not so much...
