**RUMOR**: Camaro to get power boost for 2012?

**RUMOR**
There, that should make people aware that it is just a rumor.

Reported at http://gmauthority.com

It’s time to put down your coffee and pay attention. Our sources have recently let us know that we should expect a power boost to the 6.2 liter (LS3 and L99) mill in the Camaro SS.

Apparently, many within GM are peeved that Ford’s new Mustang 5.0 is faster in the quarter mile than the Camaro SS, even though the ‘Stang has significantly less power. One way to rectify this problem is to decrease the Camaro’s weight. However, decreasing the poundage is a more involved ( a.k.a. expensive) process than simply adding some more power to the beastly 6.2 liter LS3. And as owners of the current Camaro SS may well know, there’s plenty of untapped power potential in that engine.

Our sources didn’t give us specific numbers or timing details, but if we were to guess, we’d wager a 20 horsepower bump would feel right at home for the 2012 model year – the same year that the Camaro is expected to receive a significant overhaul of the interior.

That said, we have to wonder whether the Corvette will consequently receive a power increase of its own. Since the Camaro may already be cannibalizing Corvette sales, a bump in power may be just what the doctor ordered to make the ‘Vette worth the additional sticker price when cross-shopped with the Camaro.

Just what I wanted to hear! I was hoping (and sort of expecting) this to happen. Good post!

Since when is the Mustang 5.0L faster in the quarter mile? The tests I've seen indicate otherwise. It's virtually a dead heat / driver's race, but the ones I've seen have the Camaro ahead in a straight line...

Whatever the case, I'd certainly be happy to see a few extra ponies for the Camaro SS. I'd also love an upgraded handling package!

Since when did the 5.0 have "significantly less power" than the LS3?

CamaroScotty 10-25-2010 06:48 AM

Well, my guess its a trans or gearing change... They could safely bump up the HP on paper without doing anything to the LS3. But bumping it on paper obviously wouldn't make it faster.....

will the boost come in computer programming or some new part ? probably retuned computer?

Just give the camaro a gear option and it would run right with the Gt 3.73 gear car. Although a gear option and 20 more ponies would be good also. And yes the GT with 3.73 gears will beat the Camaro in the 1/4 mile most of the time.

Ah yes, I forgot to mention that a gear option would be nice as well.

The Camaro's 3rd gear has the same overall ratio (gear times rear axle) as Mustang's 4th gear when the Mustang has 3.73 rear. Add in the Camaro's taller tires, and the Camaro's 3rd gear is actually TALLER than Mustang's 4th!

If GM would just stop putting horrible tunes in these cars they wouldn't have to do anything. I can't stand how GM gives you a motor advertised at 400+ hp but unless the planets align they reduce the power to save the tranny and parts. I'd rather have 375 horsepower all the time then having a possible 400 but when it's too hot 350 or perfect weather 426, etc....Same for the auto tranny tuning. Auto L99 would be a solid 12 second car form the factory if they didn't detune the hell out of the tranny, instead I keep hearing and reading about 14 second L99's but GM advertising it is .1 second behind the manual in the 1/4.

It all depends on how fast the Mustang driver can shift.

Camaro driver only has to shift twice.

Mustang driver has to shift 3 times... BUT...

... The Mustang's more aggressive gearing puts more torque to the rear wheels despite having less torque from the engine, and...

... Mustang's about 250 to 300 pounds lighter.

The fact that the Mustang winds up even dead even at times despite losing fractions of seconds shifting over the Camaro is a clue.

Which is interesting in that the 3.73's are probably not as good as the 3.55's in the Mustang as far as stock 1/4mi times go.

And this is why competition is a good thing for everyone else.

As mentioned in the second paragraph of the original post, I would rather see some weight loss in the 5th Gen, but oh well.
