Opinions Wanted

Hi everyone, new member here. I bought my G5 camaro about 4 months ago and love it! As a mechanical engineer I could not resist customizing it, so I designed a hood vent and had a friend make an aluminum sample with his CNC machine. Before I pay him to make the final version, I was hoping to get some feedback from fellow G5 Camaro owners. Below are a couple pics, let me know what you think. Be frank, I have thick skin . I just want something that looks clean and is functional.

Re: Opinions Wanted

mmmm....i like the scoop idea...but those dont look right there. id either put them in the rear of the hood, which would make more sense for heat reduction....or toward the front so the intake can suck air through it.

I'd like to see a bigger image. You have a photo gallery here (in your user CP), upload a larger one so we can check out the details!

I chose the position so the structural webbing of the hood would not need to be cut (see the third picture I just posted). When the car is moving, the engine compartment is actually pressurized relative to the cars speed, so the vents will allow air to escape the engine compartment. In fact these are directly above the front half of the valve covers.

Any comments regarding the aesthetics of the design?

Re: Opinions Wanted

That makes sense then, and it is pretty neat! Do you plan to make these and sell them?

Probably not, the CNC cost would make them too costly. But I'm going to submit a provisional patent on the design in case I do want to make them for resale later on.

Re: Opinions Wanted

it could be sold as a aftermarket piece. im sure it would sell good. look at the companies that make things like brake vent coolers, and the fender vents. i could see it doing pretty well. you said there wasnt ... a patent...right?

It's tough to get a utility patent on something as common as a vent, but a design patent is not a problem. I have a provisional patent (patent pending) being processed which gives me a year to decide whether to market/sell it and move forward with a full patent. Right now my intent is to build a prototype for myself.

Someone will probably steal the idea, but my lawyer is a PitBull

Yea, any chance you can place it on the car?

I think the vents look really good.

Thanks! I just put the hood on the car with prototype vents yesterday. I'll post some pics this weekend. ;-)
