275/40-17s are not too wide, will fit fine, and will not throw off your speedometer or odometer by much, if at all. I have 275/40-17s on my car. Here is a comparison for you:
Tire Size Comparison
Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
245/50-16 4.8in 12.8in 25.6in 80.6in 786 0.0%
275/40-17 4.3in 12.8in 25.7in 80.6in 786 0.1%
This is what I used to find those specs:

Re: would 97 SS wheels fit a 95 Z28 ?
You may require a modification. In late 96 model year, or early 97, GM corrected the mismatch between the front and rear axle hub diameters. Up to that point, the rear axle hubs on the 10-bolt rear that had been pirated from the S10 pickup were about 0.03" larger in diameter than the front hubs. So GM made the hub holes on the wheels larger (93-96) so they would fit over both the front and the rear hubs. In 97, when they made the rear hubs match the smaller front hubs, they also made the hub holes in the wheels smaller at well.
Test fit the wheels carefully. If there is any interference at all between the rear axle hubs and the hub holes in the wheels, the inside diameter of the wheel hub holes will need to by lightly sanded to open them up.
Some people assume its just a tight fit, and force the wheels over the hubs with an impact wrench.... serious mistake. Can lead to the wheels getting stuck on the hubs, or - worst case - cause the wheels to fracture.
This is covered in the street wheels and tires FAQ at the top of the page.
The speedo error will depend on which wheels were on your car when it left the factory. "Base" Z28's got 235/55-16 tires (26.1"). They only got the 245/50-16's if the car had the Z-rated tire option (RPO "QLZ")
