I have a 96 z with the lt1 but has headers with a wet nitrosis system. The car had head problems and am getting those fixed. Car has forged flat top pistons, not sure of cam, roller rockers, it's a six speed and has a ford rearend with 410 gears, frame connectors. What would be a good tire to run on this car - I'm going to mostly drive on street and tires on car are cheap and wore out. I may take to track sometimes so looking for a tire that will work mostly on road but sometimes on drag - also what is the best size - I see two listed for car - has the original wheels.

The Z28 had 16x8" wheels, with 55mm offset. The SS coupes had 17x9" wheels with 50mm offset. With the 16x8" wheels, the stock tires were either 235/55-16 without the Z-rated tire option, or 245/50-16 with the Z-rated option. The sticker on the door will tell you the original tire size.

About the best you are going to do with 16x8 wheels is a 245/50-16 drag radial. And if you ever drive in the wet, even that is not a good choice. The Nitto 555R is probably the most forgiving drag radial in the wet. Use at your own risk.

I'd go to Tire rack, put in the 245/50-16 tire size, and use the "survey" data to find the tires that have the best dry traction rating.

Some may suggest going to a 255/50-16, but there's not many decent choices left these days in that size.
