As I recall it was October or November, and it was over 80 degrees and dry as hell. 80 isn't terrible, but 80 in October means 110 in July, and that's too damn hot. Regardless, people's front lawns were brown and patchy, and that means it's too dry. This would have been 1999 -- maybe that was an exceptionally dry year?

No, people just don't know how to take care of their lawns. St. Augistine grass is everywhere and it totally sucks. People need to be planting bermuda and watering it, instead they get something else and let it burn and look like ****. My parents are guilty of this. The whole back yard is St Augistine and if you water it and keep it high, it's great, otherwise it will burn and look horrible.

In Michigan (which is not too hot or too dry in my opinion), you can grow whatever the heck grass you want, never water it, and it will be green.

No, it doesn't mean 100 plus degree temps in the summer. It rarely ever reaches over 100 degrees in the DFW area. The 10 years I was there I can't remember it ever getting that hot, but as stated the humidity can make the heat brutal. The months you were there the humidity is not as high, but DFW is far from dry. Like any state that gets very hot in the summer, vegetation needs water. Not sure what area of DFW you were in, but most know this and most lawns remain green during the summer.

I almost wish the grass in my yard would just die! Instead I've got weeds sticking up a few feet high that I need to mow down. I am pretty sure that is the result of a sewer line leakage though... I also have more than a dozen trees on my property that do a pretty good job keeping the place cool.

It usually gets over 100 about 3-5 days during the summer on average, maybe less. A/C was invented for a reason. DFW goes through a drought every couple of years, but for the most part the spring is pretty wet and July-August is ***** hot and fairly dry. Nothing that bad though. Anybody that says it sucks is a wuss
