SX Performance Street Car Shootout Series events held each Tuesday at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois.

All vehicles compete utilizing Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) approved tires. All other modifications are permitted. Tuesday SCSS Track Records can be set during official qualifying or championship rounds. The Official Street Car Shootout qualifying period begins at 6:30 PM and concludes at 9:00 PM, (barring unforeseen circumstances). At 9:20 PM, the four quickest qualifiers meet in no-handicap eliminations with the championship final round held at 9:45 PM. Each of the Top 16 qualifiers receives a "Fastest Street Car Qualifier" decal. The SCSS trophies and decals are presented by SX Performance Fuel Systems. Additionally, the two quickest Sport Tuner drivers, (open to all passenger cars except Rear-Wheel-Drive vehicles with engines of six cylinders or more), also meet in a no-handicap championship round for trophies presented by St. Louis Street Racers.com and the two quickest Super Truck drivers, (open to all trucks and utility vehicles), meet in a no-handicap championship round for trophies presented by Gateway Raceway.com. JULY 3rd, 2007 SX PERFORMANCE STREET CAR SHOOTOUT FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tim Mallicoat, Collinsville, IL 1968 565 Camaro 0.147 8.695 156.84
RU Tony Buhl, Lebanon, IL 1989 306 Mustang -0.274 (foul) 9.897 138.02

The longest win streak in the history of the SX Performance Street Car Shootout Series continued with another display of dominance by Tim “Moose” Mallicoat as he not only obliterated his opponents but inched closer to the SCSS Elapsed Time and Speed Records. Again recording the best performances ever from his naturally-aspirated ‘68 Camaro, the Collinsville, Illinois racer earned his ninth consecutive victory of 2007, (and the tenth of his career), while keeping his final-round record unblemished.

With fairly miraculous conditions for the first week of July, (corrected elevations ranged from 2120 feet to 1497 feet above sea level), “Moose” was one of a huge number of drivers who recorded their best performances yet. In a bizarre turn of events, however, the seventy-sixth SCSS event became the first in the four-year series to feature redlight starts in every single competitive match during eliminations!

The official qualifying session opened with past SCSS event finalist Brandon Carter’s bronze Mustang blasting to a 6.16-second, 116.02 mph eighth-mile and then coasting to his first official nine-second run, a 9.84 at only 114.88 mph. However, attention quickly turned to Mallicoat. The infamous black Camaro, notorious for its brutal consistency, stunned onlookers with a violent, sideways launch and an equally squirrelly 1000-feet pass in which Mallicoat pedaled the throttle numerous times in an attempt to reign in the normally sedate Chevy. A coasting 9.11 at a mere 120.14 mph was the quarter-mile result, but a closer look at the run proved something was definitely different about the “Terror of 2007“. The Camaro had gotten sideways before it ever reached the sixty-feet timers but was still clocked in that distance at 1.266 seconds…the quickest “short time” in SCSS history, breaking Mallicoat’s own 1.270-second mark from October 17th of 2006. Moreover, while Mallicoat was steering the Camaro all over the lane, it recorded a 3.599-second 330-feet ETanother SCSS Record!

While fans and competitors began speculation of what new trick had made such a handful of Mallicoat’s Chevy, (and “Moose” wasn’t talking), reigning SCSS season champ Tony Buhl hit a great 9.77/139.72 pass which seemed to indicate that his supercharged ‘89 Mustang had finally recovered from its recent electrical problems. Before the first hour of qualifying had ended, however, Mallicoat returned to uncork an arrow-straight pass which culminated in a best-ever 8.67 at a whopping 158.52 mph, moving him to within a tenth of a second and three miles per hour from Sam Moore’s SCSS Records set in 2006. More amazing was the fact that the run’s 60-feet ET, (1.295), and 330-feet ET, (3.618), seemed to indicate that Mallicoat may have detuned the car to tame it for the pass!

While Carter made several mid-ten second runs without the aid of nitrous oxide on his small block Mustang and Buhl clocked a subsequent 10.01/139.01, both secured a spot in eliminations. The four-car field was rounded out by last week‘s runner-up, Ray Arthur, in the “Suspicion” ’67 Camaro which validated his seven-day-old 10.03 career-best with a 10.05/131.52.

“We finally figured out the problem!”, said an obviously relieved Tony Buhl before the semi-finals. “For a month, the car would simply cut out…literally stop running…when it would hit 3500 RPM. I had to take my foot completely off the throttle, stab it again and it would run up to 3500 and shut off again. We knew it was electrical and we checked just about everything but it appears that an electrical short was occurring in the wiring harness. We changed the harness and it’s back to where it should be”. The fact that Buhl’s car was back to its nine-second form was not lost on Arthur, who knew his only chance against Buhl in the semi-finals was a holeshot. His gamble came up short by fifty-five thousandths of a second, however, with a redlight start which nullified his 10.17/129.94 against Buhl’s 9.93/138.36. Brandon Carter was in the same position; although his nine-second pace was impressive, he needed at least a starting line advantage to hold any hope of outrunning Mallicoat. The bronze Mustang left the line a mere four thousandths of a second too soon but still drew a loud response from the crowd with a mind-boggling 9.35 at 147.79 mph…the second best run of the year for a Ford-powered entry…in pursuit of Mallicoat’s 8.69/157.03. The black Camaro hit a 1.268-second 60-feet ET on the run, (coupled with an even quicker 3.598 330 ET record), and a 5.565/125.33 eighth-mile which is within a hundredth of a second of Moore’s all-time 660 record.

Although it was the first time Buhl had faced Mallicoat in a final round since the black Chevy won their April 17th meeting, Buhl could take solace in the fact his Mustang was the only winner other than Mallicoat’s beast in the 2007 SCSS program, having won the season-opening March 27th event which Mallicoat did not attend. As yet another driver faced with the pressure of gaining a holeshot, Buhl launched four thousandths of a second too soon, (identical to his -0.004 RT against Ray Arthur in the semi-finals of the May 8th event), while Mallicoat stormed to an astonishingly consistent 8.69/156.84, (with a 1.272 60-feet ET), for a ninth straight title. However, the drama wasn‘t over for the Mustang pilot after the foul start; four hundred feet down track, a flash of fire emanated from the exhaust pipes of the Ford and it simply stopped running. The mysterious electrical problem had returned, verified by a stomp on the throttle before the engine went silent again.

“We really have NO idea what the problem is now”, said a dejected Buhl while accepting his runner-up trophy in front of the main grandstands, “and I don’t even know where to start looking. We really thought it was fixed. I can’t believe it did it again”. Meanwhile, Mallicoat was finally cornered about the change which almost made his normally-stable ride nearly unmanageable. After a long pause, the “Moose” finally came clean. “We changed carburetors. I switched from the 1050 cfm Dominator we were running to an Evans-built 1150 we had in the shop that was originally on my blue ‘68 Camaro. We just haven’t gotten it tuned quite right yet. I debated putting a 4.30 rear gear in the car--it has a 4.10 now--but it’s already going through the lights at 7000 RPM so that didn’t seem too smart. We’re so close to that record. Just a little more tuning and we can get it…even with a naturally-aspirated motor!”.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: Tony Huff allowed Tim Mallicoat to gain ground in the 2007 SCSS Championship point chase when he failed to qualify for the Super Sixteen. The winningest SCSS driver ever was again behind the wheel of brother Dale Huff’s show-quality 510-cubic inch ‘67 Chevelle while his Team Silva Bullet ‘68 Nova is being rewired. His first run was aborted with a fuel leak after the burnout and a second attempt ended with a destroyed transmission on the starting line. Mallicoat is now four points ahead of Huff while Tony Buhl moved to within two points of Huff’s second place position…After joining the SCSS 10-Second and 130 MPH Clubs last week with what was then a career-best 10.58/132.91, Brandon Carter’s 9.84 shot made the High Ridge, Missouri Mustang racer the twenty-fourth member of the 9-Second Club and his later 147.79 mph charge earned the seventeenth spot in the 140 MPH Club…William “Cuda” Johnson finally debuted his blue supercharged ‘93 Mustang after recently receiving tuning assistance from NMRA/NMCA star Bob Kurgan. Although traction issues kept the car to 1000-feet passes, the veteran St. Louis racer managed a coasting best of 10.54/116.02 while hitting 122.01 mph in the eighth…Paul Boston’s slick red ’69 Chevelle clocked a best of 11.28/121.81 during qualifying but the twin four-barrel/tunnel ram-equipped 396 Chevy ran 11.33 at an even faster 122.36 mph in late timed trials…Jared Harrison’s ’00 Camaro qualified on the surprisingly quick Super Sixteen bump spot at 12.03/116.82 but dipped to an 11.98/117.04 after qualifying concluded…Among several unusual entries was the 1965 Buick Special of Mark Myers. The Special was a low-dollar variation of the Skylark which came from the factory with a V6 engine, an extreme rarity forty-two years ago. Myers’ version is now equipped with a 455 Buick and ran 11.97/111.28 during qualifying and 11.92/111.41 in late timed trials…Matt Linebaugh qualified for the field with his wild 318-powered ’70 RoadRunner with a great 11.59/117.44 best…”Tsunami Tommy” Cherryhomes made his first appearance of the season with his 440-powered ’67 Dodge Coronet although his best of 12.26/108.72 failed to make the cut…Gary Bates put his brutally quick yellow ’04 GTO Judge back into the eleven-second zone with a best of 11.86/114.78...After qualifying fourteenth last week, Cliff Buerger’s ’03 Cobra was the seventeenth qualifier for the second time in 2007, missing the field by nine hundredths of a second…Not too many cars fail to qualify for the Super Sixteen with a 119.61 mph speed but George Minor’s Springfield, Illinois-based ’00 Trans Am pulled it off with a best ET of 12.43...The quickest six-cylinder machine was Mat Tallman’s astounding ’97 Buick Regal GS at 12.55/109.54 followed by Cliff Hughes’ ’87 Regal, (12.78/110.92), and Pat Scholl’s ’03 Nissan Sentra (13.27/109.23)…Possibly the most attention was paid to the immaculate black 428 Super Cobra Jet-powered ’69 Torino of Dick Cerame although an awful lot of fans were seen scoping out the fantastic pink 340 Six-Pak ’70 Challenger of Clark Mearns, too…Dan “the Iceman” Harris won yet another High School Eliminator title for DeSmet (MO) H.S. with his nitrous-aided V6 Thunderbird defeating Paige Huff’s Camaro ragtop from Collinsville (IL) High…The folks from SX Performance Fuel Systems awarded several bonus prizes to eliminator winners including new SX Performance fuel regulators…Fans in the grandstands enjoyed a clear view of the annual Veiled Prophet Fair fireworks on the St. Louis riverfront beneath the Gateway Arch, only 2.92 miles from the Gateway International Raceway starting line.

JULY 3rd, 2007 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Mat Tallman, Springfield, IL 1997 231 Regal 0.212 12.531 110.90
RU Patrick Scholl, Overland, MO 2003 152 Sentra -0.502 (foul) 13.154 107.60

Mat Tallman’s Buick Regal Gran Sport has long been one of the quickest and fastest Front-Wheel-Drive six-cylinder machines in the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown but the Springfield, Illinois campaigner can now lay claim to both records for the breed as well as an STSS winner’s trophy. In an unusual event in which six-cylinder rigs were the dominant entry, Tallman’s Buick was, by far, the strongest of the lot.

Qualifying with a brilliant 12.55 at a huge 109.54 mph speed, Tallman was the only Sport Tuner under thirteen seconds. While those numbers erased all others for new FWD 6-Cylinder records, Tallman’s most impressive run actually came four minutes after qualifying ended. Although the qualifying period concluded only a few pairs ahead of the Buick, Tallman made the most of one of the first passes in late timed trials with an astonishing 12.32 at 111.01 mph, gaining nearly a one second advantage over the rest of the field.

In fact, the battle for the other final round berth was a tough one. Patrick Scholl’s 3.5-litre six-cylinder 2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V rocketed to a new career-best of 13.27/109.23 via a squirt of nitrous oxide to grab the second slot from past STSS finalist Rick Poepping’s supercharged FWD6 ’04 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, (another best-ever 13.30/102.76 followed by a late timed trial of 13.29 at 104.12), by a mere three hundredths of a second. Carlos Fuentes’ ’05 SRT-4 Neon was the quickest four-cylinder in the qualifying order, (13.48/105.00), followed by last week’s runner-up, Jesse Amsinger’s ‘04 SRT-4 Neon, (a best-ever 13.56/105.79), and the All-Wheel-Drive six-cylinder ’98 Volkswagen Golf R32 of Scott Hutto, which used its 2.8-litre VR6 engine to hit a best-yet 13.91/101.99.

In the championship dash between two first-time finalists in the second-ever all-six-banger STSS final but the first for a pair of FWD6s, Scholl pushed the ‘Tree and drew a redlight en route to a best-ever 13.15/107.60 while Tallman hit another twelve-second effort at 12.53/110.90. Scholl was still happy with the runner-up honors, breaking out a high-dollar stogie for the trophy presentation from the humidor of his sponsor, the Cedar Box Cigar Lounge in Alton, Illinois. “It’s actually a Maxima-series six-cylinder”, noted Scholl, “and we’re just using a little nitrous right now. It looks like it might make it into the twelves if it keeps up this pace, though”. For Tallman, the trophy was a long time coming. “Since last year, I‘ve added a new blower, new heads and a new tune. The car has run in the elevens but this is the quickest it’s ever gone in street trim. Not bad for what used to be my Mom’s car!”.

JULY 3rd, 2007 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Allen Hannel, Caseyville, IL 1986 383 S-10 0.494 10.237 131.02
RU Mike Williamson, Wentzville, MO 2000 330 Lightning -0.022 (foul) 11.079 125.30

Becoming only the fourth driver to win three titles in the history of the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown, Allen “Crabby” Hannel is now three-for-three at the helm of Hal Marshall‘s nitrous oxide-aided white 383-inch ‘86 S-10. While he managed to clock another best run for the winningest Tuesday night vehicle ever, Hannel’s machine won the event but may not have been the most impressive machine of the night. In fact, there were several machines which drew applause from the fans.

Hannel opened qualifying with a 10.117, (two thousandths of a second quicker than his 10.119 best of last week), at 131.52 mph. His closest opponent was the magnificent yellow 2000 Ford Lightning of Mike Williamson who also managed to squeeze the best performance ever from his supercharged F-250 by six hundredths of a second with a tremendous 11.13/123.44. Behind the two finalists were Randy Christy, Jr., whose yellow ‘99 Dakota ran its best numbers ever at 12.61/108.59, and crowd favorite Jason Hill, whose Robertsville, Missouri-based 2003 Chevy 3500 fogged in the track with diesel smoke while setting the all-time Gateway record for Dually trucks with an incredible best of 13.39/103.06! Don Hilderbrand’s unique 455 Olds-powered ‘67 Chevy C10, (a best-ever 13.57/96.20), Ed Kramer’s black ‘02 Lightning, (13.61/105.41), and Chris Pohlmann’s diesel-powered red ‘03 Ford F-250, (13.99/95.09), filled the top six spots.

It wasn’t much of a surprise when Williamson fouled by twenty-two thousandths in the final round or that Hannel clocked a winning 10.23/131.02. What was a shock, however, was Williamson’s losing 11.07 at a huge 125.30 mph top end. For a show-quality Lightning driven to the track using only a supercharger and no nitrous oxide, it was an amazing pass. “It’s getting there”, laughed Williamson after the final round, “but it’s not in the tens yet. I’m running about 18 pounds of boost; I burned a spark plug pretty good last time we were out but I have a new tune that‘s a little less aggressive”. Speaking of burned spark plugs, Hannel wasn’t immune to a bit of engine torture, either. “After the 10.11, it started slowing down on its own“, said Hannel in his third winners‘ circle trophy presentation. “We found a little blow-by coming out of one cylinder so it may be time for Hal to take a look at ’er. I’m starting to feel comfortable in the truck now, though, so as long as he keeps makin’ it run, I’ll keep drivin’ it”.
