These results reflect the record holders, qualifiers, and final round contestants at each of the
Street Car Shootout Series events held each Tuesday at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois.

All vehicles compete utilizing Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) approved tires. All other modifications are permitted. Tuesday SCSS Track Records can be set during the two official qualifying or championship rounds. The first official Street Car Shootout qualifying period begins at 6:00 PM with sessions continuing until 9:45 PM, (barring unforeseen circumstances). At 10:00 PM, the four quickest qualifiers meet in no-handicap eliminations advancing two winners to the championship final round. Each of the Top 16 qualifiers receives a "Fastest Street Car Qualifier" decal. The SCSS trophies and decals are presented by Gateway Raceway.com. Additionally, the two quickest Sport Tuner drivers, (open to all passenger cars except Rear-Wheel-Drive vehicles with engines of eight cylinders or more), also meet in a no-handicap championship round for trophies presented by St. Louis Street Racers.com and the two quickest Super Truck drivers, (open to all trucks and utility vehicles), meet in a no-handicap championship round for trophies presented by Gateway Raceway.com. All finalists in all categories also receive free digital images from the event courtesy of Bret Kepner Photos.com and one free entry to a future SCSS event.

He just keeps going and going and going; Tim “Moose” Mallicoat has now won eight consecutive titles in the 2009 Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. In its thirty-sixth event victory, (and its forty-third final round appearance), the M&M Automotive/Huff Motorsports “Hellraiser” 1968 Camaro raised its career round-win average to 88.51%…including its incredible 2009 season average of 95.83% with twenty-three elimination victories and only one loss!

The secret to the success of Mallicoat’s naturally-aspirated, 555-cubic inch Chevy is pure, unadulterated consistency but its performance in the twelfth event in the 2009 SCSS season was slightly different. Although the event was rained out on its original Tuesday, July 28th, date and rescheduled for Wednesday, July 29th, racers took advantage of a perfect night in which the temperature hovered between 81 and 72 degrees and the corrected elevation remained exceptional for late July between 2118 and 1505 feet above sea level.

Mallicoat, however, suffered from rare traction woes on his first qualifying attempt in the second qualifying period. After a slower-than-normal 1.31-second elapsed time in the first sixty feet, “Moose” was forced to “pedal” the throttle of his Chevy to a 9.18-second, 153.35 effort when tire spin became evident two hundred feet off the starting line. He returned in the third qualifying session and clocked a solid 8.75/155.69, however, to secure his sixth straight low qualifier position and his tenth of the season.

The field was surprisingly bereft of suitable opponents for Mallicoat. After last week’s massive intake explosion in his loe nine-second “Suspicion“ ‘67 Camaro, Ray Arthur replaced the torched transmission in his “S-10 Revenge” pickup and pushed the 355-inch small block to a career-best 9.91/135.95 with the aid of nitrous oxide injection, (normally not used by regular driver John Brawley). With that effort, Arthur stayed one position ahead of point series rival Curtis Paulfrey’s yellow 502-cubic inch ‘68 Camaro, (10.26/132.12), and three-time Super Truck Showdown event winner Don Moore filled the fourth qualifying slot with his black 468-inch ‘91 S-10 at 10.44/123.05.

The pairings for the semi-finals presented the first all-truck match in SCSS racing since the father-and-son team of Hal and Brett Marshall met in the opening round of the April 15th, 2008, event. Although Arthur was gunning to earn points toward the 2009 championship, Moore had consistently raced only in the Super Truck Showdown. However, Moore insisted the only reason he came to race was the hope of meeting Arthur for a heads-up battle and, since Arthur planned only to compete in the Street Car Shootout, Moore elected to run in the top four, as well. Prior to the semi-final skirmish, the two agreed the loser would return to run in the Super Truck Showdown final round.

The battle for which Moore prepared ended being far from close. The black S-10 ran out of nitrous oxide midway through the pass and slowed to an 11.18/118.24 against Arthur’s 10.37/123.79. In the other half of the semis, Paulfrey strapped a holeshot of seventeen hundredths of a second on Mallicoat but his 10.38/132.91 was quickly overpowered by Mallicoat’s consistent 8.78/155.35.

Incredibly, Arthur’s nitrous oxide cannister was empty for the final round against Mallicoat and, as the show-quality S-10 slowed to a 10.88/125.34, Mallicoat ripped to an 8.85/155.45 for yet another SCSS trophy. During winner’s circle ceremonies in front of the main grandstands, Mallicoat happened to notice a bit of black paint missing near the exhaust outlet on the driver’s side of the Camaro. “That’s not good”, said a puzzled Mallicoat as he looked at the scorched paint. “That can only mean it’s running way too lean. We’ll have to take a look at it in the shop”. The next day, Mallicoat discovered a severely burned head gasket and immediately began to effect repairs for the next SCSS event. “That pretty much explains why it slowed down in the final round”, said Mallicoat during the thrash, ”and we’re just really, really lucky we caught the problem when we did”.







NOTES FROM THE SCSS: ...Curtis Paulfrey has never been “left on” by an opponent! The driver of the Winner’s Circle Tire and Auto ‘68 502 Camaro has had the better Reaction Time in all nine elimination rounds in which he has appeared. The Brighton, Illinois, racer slapped a 0.004 RT on Mallicoat in the very first elimination match of the season back on April 8th…Mike Mester’s bright white mid-nine second 2000 Trans Am qualified fifth with an off-pace 10.65/126.32; the trouble was traced to an electrical problem which kept the nitrous system from functioning. Mester improved to an “all motor” 10.54/127.29 during late timed trials…Bruce Null and Ben Craven became the 224th and 225th members of the SCSS 120 MPH Club, respectively. Null’s ‘64 Nova qualified in the Super Sixteen for the first time ever with an 11.40/121.47 best and Craven’s 2006 Mustang hit an 11.72 at a whopping 128.80 mph…Darryl Reece put his ’68 396 Camaro in the show for the second straight week with an 11.72/116.51 but returned in late timed trials and blasted out a best-ever 11.33/122.59!…Ted Fuchs’ white ’74 401 Gremlin X didn’t qualify for the field with a best of 12.76/108.99 but reeled off a career-best 11.65 at only 104.61 after qualifying ended…Ches Polak qualified his ‘95 Corvette on the bump spot at 12.45/109.80 but improved to a best-ever 12.36/110.23 in late timed trials…Larry Walker returned with his white ’78 406 Corvette and made the field with his quickest and fastest run ever at 11.74/117.30...Longtime bracket racer Elwyn Mielke qualified for the Super Sixteen in his first attempt, running a best of 12.12/111.53 in his Halpin Music Company/Freer Auto Body-sponsored ’91 360 Firebird on street rubber…David Lee also made the Super Sixteen for the first time with a best-ever 12.25/117.31 from his supercharged 2008 Mustang…Dan Freeman clocked a best-ever 12.41/113.33 to qualify thirteenth in his ’98 Cobra…Paul Stroud’s white ’89 302 Mustang made its best pass ever at 12.37/107.34 and qualified for the field for the first time…The final High School Eliminator event of the 2009 season found Aaron Worstell’s ‘89 302 Mustang from Union (MO) High School defeating a surprising Stephanie Holtgreven of Marquette (MO) H.S. who wheeled her blue ’86 Camaro to her first final round appearance. Worstell produced a stunning 0.001-second Reaction Time during eliminations for the THIRD week in a row! Derek Allen will reign as GIR‘s 2009 High School Point Champion after an amazing season with his Waterloo (IL) High School Gator Gumbo-sponsored ‘84 350 Cutlass. Both Allen and Worstell will now head to O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis (IN) in September to battle for the NHRA Division III High School Championship. Good luck to both!

Kurt Kreisz, whose 232-cubic inch V6 Thunderbird Super Coupe scored its first victory on July 22nd, became one of only eight drivers to have earned two consecutive titles in the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown. The Missourian’s dark blue Ford also led qualifying for the second straight week and was the only Sport Tuner entry to qualify in the Super Sixteen field of the Street Car Shootout.

A 12.26/112.42 effort put the T-Bird ahead of Sean Kennedy‘s turbocharged 231-inch black ‘87 Buick Regal, (12.48/108.69), during qualifying and those two efforts ended the incredible streak of Dan Harris, whose 232-inch ”Six Bang ‘Stang” ‘04 Mustang had appeared in the Tuner Showdown for a record nine consecutive events dating back to April 21st.

Had qualifying lasted a bit longer, Harris would’ve been in the final round again. His best effort during the official qualifying sessions was a 12.62/105.57 but, fifty minutes after qualifying had ended, Harris unleashed a 12.28/107.87 which would’ve made the show! The rest of the Top Five Tuners included Paul Weishaar’s All-Wheel-Drive six-cylinder 2004 BMW 135i, (an absolute best-ever 12.69/110.08), and Kyle Bement’s extremely impressive 245-inch V6-powered 2006 Mustang, (13.15/108.47).

Kennedy’s Regal, the first V6 Buick to appear in a final round since Scott Keller’s white T-Type won the June 10th title, had been running consistent 12.40s throughout the month of July. In his first Sport Tuner final round, however, the Buick slipped to a 12.51/109.54 and Kreisz, aided by a massive two-tenths holeshot, cruised to a 12.27/112.74 victory.

“The car was about as consistent as its ever been tonight”, said Kreisz accepting his second winner’s plaque of the season. “I didn‘t change anything from last week but I did experience a bit more tire spin this time which is probably why I slowed from the 12.05 I ran last week. The guys on Thunderbird Underground were pretty pumped about last week’s win so they’ll really like two in a row!”. Meanwhile, Kennedy was quick to give all credit to his father and crewchief, Pat, who tuned the Regal into the final round. “I guess you could say he‘s my only sponsor“, laughed Sean, who is a regular on the Turbo Buick.com website forums. “He’s the guy who makes this possible. We race it together but he makes a lot of the tuning calls”. Added Pat, “We’ve been sneaking up on the right combination and the car is responding. The goal is to get it in the eleven-second zone and we’re getting closer”.

While accepting his trophy on July 22nd for a third consecutive win in the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown, Don Moore said he was going to take a break from racing until September. His vacation didn’t last long. One week later, Moore was back at the wheel of his black ’91 S-10 pickup as a part of Scott “Lucky” Hudson‘s Speed Scene Live! InterNet radio talk show team and he only returned to race one opponent.

“When I found out that Ray Arthur was going to run his S-10 Revenge truck this week, we decided to come back out”, explained Moore. “We’ve never had the chance to race him and he was one of the guys we really wanted to run. We came out strictly to line up with Ray”.

The two battled through qualifying with Arthur running a 9.91/125.95 best-ever pass to Moore’s 10.44/123.05. Ironically, the two paired up in the opening round of the Street Car Shootout and agreed to run in the Top Four program with the loser returning to race for the Super Truck trophy. In that battle, Moore ran out of nitrous oxide and lost a 10.37/123.79 to 11.18/118.24 race. While Arthur went on to lose the SCSS title bout for his eleventh career runner-up, Moore pulled back in front of the main grandstands to meet Super Truck first alternate Jimmy Price, whose wild 455 Buick-powered ‘84 El Camino earned the right to compete in the trophy dash by virtue of a career-best 12.98/103.77.

Moore needed no power adder to clock an 11.20/118.30 and, moreover, his opponent was never in the picture. Price’s Chevy stumbled badly off the starting line in the final and never got a chance to threaten the S-10’s fourth straight win.

“That was embarrassing”, said Price who still gladly accepted his first Super Truck trophy. “I don’t know why it did that but the big Buick engines are finicky that way. I’m good friends with (2009 High School Eliminator season champion) Matt Gosch and his dad, Chris, who run the same engine combination. I’m just happy we got it into the twelves earlier and now we can work from there”.

After being chided about his non-existent “vacation”, Moore insisted he won’t be back until after Labor Day. “I really am taking time off now”, laughed Moore in the winner’s circle. “It looks like the truck needs a bit of attention, anyway, so we really are going to stay home for a while”.
