JUNE 5th, 2007 SX PERFORMANCE STREET CAR SHOOTOUT FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

RU Philip Reichardt, Festus, MO 1967 350 Camaro 0.429 21.883 40.09

Seemingly the only driver to escape unscathed in what was a bizarre and generally nasty evening of racing, Tim “Moose” Mallicoat ripped through the field to become the first competitor to win five consecutive events in the history of the SX Performance Street Car Shootout Series. The Collinsville, Illinois, campaigner has won every event entered in the 2007 season and remains undefeated in final rounds since his first appearance in a trophy dash on October 17th, 2006 in the final event of last season. Mallicoat recorded a career-best elapsed time during the program but found few serious challenges when most of the serious contenders suffered through a myriad of problems. Although the race featured the seventh quickest SCSS field ever, (with a “bump spot” for the Super Sixteen of 11.64 seconds), the cut-off would’ve been substantially quicker if not for the surprising number of ultra-fast regular competitors who were caught by plain ol’ bad luck.

In a night filled with strange occurrences, however, even the weather was weird. When early timed trials began, low barometric pressure kept the corrected elevation at 2054 feet above sea level. By the time the final rounds were contested, however, the air had plummeted more than one thousand feet to only 985 feet…the second-best corrected altitude of the season! By the end of the event, most teams had recorded their best performances in late timed trials after the official qualifying session had concluded. If runs from timed trials were included in qualifying, the “bump spot” for the field would’ve been 11.45 seconds, (with fifteenth position at 11.19), including a total of twelve cars under eleven seconds flat!

While returning veteran Joe Williams’ bright yellow ‘70 Nova opened qualifying with run of 11.07 seconds at 123.31 miles per hour, Mallicoat wasted no time in setting the pace of the event. His familiar black ‘68 Camaro blasted to an 8.95/154.16 only ten minutes into the qualifying period. The only threats came from Williams’ improving 10.87/123.33 and rival Tony Huff, jumping into brother Dale’s show-quality 510-cubic inch ‘66 Chevelle while Huff’s trusty silver ‘68 Nova was being repaired from last week’s fire by team leader Bill Silva, carding a 10.90/114.50. A surprising 11.04/102.16 coasting effort was posted by the blue ’67 Camaro of Phil Reichardt which, after substantial tire spin off the starting line, still clocked a 7.00/114.75 eighth-mile. Also of note was the continuing electrical malady plaguing reigning SCSS Season Champion Tony Buhl, whose maroon supercharged Mustang once again failed to hit the finish line under power.

Mallicoat returned to hit an 8.84/154.99 but, only fifty-nine minutes into qualifying, a competitor (who, in a gesture of compassion, shall remain nameless), blew an oil filter completely off the engine and coated more than one thousand feet of Gateway International Raceway with synthetic oil. The GIR crew worked diligently for more than forty minutes to clean the mess but realized, after only a few pairs of cars when racing resumed, the curse of synthetic lubricants…and the reason they’ve been banned in drag racing’s professional categories…remains true. After another forty-five minutes of work involving the entire GIR crew and every piece of equipment available, (and a total clean-up duration of eighty-six minutes), qualifying finally resumed. GIR Drag Racing Director Jason Dukes extended qualifying for an extra forty minutes but most competitors were restricted to three runs or less while attempting to make the field.

Only three pairs from the end of qualifying, Reichardt again struggled to get off the starting line but shot to a 6.53/120.28 eighth-mile and a coasting 10.25/115.27 pass; the run, however, was quick enough to squeak past Marc Arnold’s five-speed smallblock Mustang to grab the second slot in the Final Four. Hal Marshall’s ten-second S-10 pickup qualified fourth but elected to run only in the Super Truck Showdown. Likewise, Arnold had discovered problems with his black Ford and withdrew. The first two alternates reported for the semi-finals bringing into the fray Ben Nungester, (who wheeled the ’71 454 Camaro of his father, Jack, to a best-ever 10.45/130.66), and the original SCSS Superstar, Dave Odehnal, (whose infamous black ’93 Camaro ran a best of 10.53/129.16 while becoming one of only a handful of drivers to qualify for an event in all four years of the SCSS!).

When eliminations opened, Reichardt’s reputation was not lost Odehnal, who pushed the ’Tree to a redlight start by a mere sixty-three thousandths of a second on a 10.54/128.96. Reichardt’s traction woes continued by the early-model Camaro still clocked a 10.09 at only 118.76 mph on the victory. Meanwhile, even Nungester’s exceptional 0.032-second Reaction Time couldn’t help his 10.48/130.05 stay in front of Mallicoat, whose naturally-aspirated bigblock Camaro, (which is now equipped with functional headlights although not required by SCSS rules), charged to a career-best 8.791 at 153.00 mph. For the fans familiar with Reichardt’s racing history, however, the final round pairing was a closer match than it appeared.

The Festus, Missouri, racer, (whose Phine Designs Auto Accessories emporium in Crystal City, Missouri, is well-known in the Bi-State area), has a notable history in heads-up competition. An eight-second runner in King of the Street competition, (hitting solid mid-five second runs in eighth-mile racing), Reichardt recently upgraded to a new single-four barrel-equipped smallblock powerplant of undisclosed displacement from Doug Albietz’s AMT Performance shop. “I usually use both a fogger and a plate system”, said Reichardt before the final round, “but we just can’t get it to hook up so I‘m only using the plate system right now. This motor has a lot more power than we had before and it can run but it’s even spinning the tires at half-track. That’s why I’ve been shutting it off early on every pass“.

Any hopes Reichardt had to plant the new power were dashed in the championship battle when he lined up far outside the “groove” and boiled the tires furiously as Mallicoat streaked to yet another SCSS title with a smokey 8.82/154.99. “That was just the dipstick tube leaking a bit”, laughed Mallicoat when questioned about the plume of smoke in the shutdown area. “I guess I need to fix that! The car was flawless all night and I can’t complain about anything that happened. It was a great night!”. For Reichardt, however, the battle may be just beginning. “We’ll be back”, said Reichardt during the winner’s circle ceremonies in front of the main grandstand. “We can beat that black car…and we will”.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: One of event’s wildest moments came from Greg “Hook-n-Ladder” Boschert, whose renowned white ’66 Mustang coupe finally shed its recurring engine problems to hit repeated 125 mph runs with a best ET of 11.64 during qualifying. On a late timed trial of 11.82/125.49, however, the St. Louis fireman suffered his own 911 emergency when a broken master cylinder rod sent him on a trip into the GIR sandtrap at over 70 miles per hour! “I looked down and saw the brake pedal all the way up to the bottom of the dash!”, exclaimed Boschert, who’s not exactly a calm guy to begin with. “I lifted off the throttle, downshifted it and started working the emergency brake but I knew I was headed for the sandpit. By the way, that’s not really sand down there…it’s pea gravel. I hit it at a pretty good clip but it actually slowed me down gradually instead of just slamming me when I went into it. It’ll take a while to clean the car up but everything else is fine“…Charlie Bewen’s slick blue small block-powered ‘68 Firebird broke into the ten-second zone with a best-ever 10.78/126.40...Steve Thomas, whose ‘06 Ford GT has stunned fans with 133 mph runs, appeared with a new 2007 Mustang Shelby GT500 and reeled off an 11.77 at a whopping 124.16 mph…The ’87 Mustang of Chris Hermann, (11.94/113.62), ran under twelve seconds for the first time ever…Robert Obemoeller’s silver ’87 Camaro could only manage a 12.13/95 best during qualifying but hit an 11.06/121.86 in late timed trials…Tony Buhl’s electrical glitch remained unsolved and the reigning champ failed to qualify for the first time since 2005...The quickest six-cylinder entry was the ‘87 Regal Grand National of area Buick star Jim Sickler at 13.22/103.06 followed by the brand new twin-turbocharged BMW 335i of Blaine Finnegan, (13.36/107.06) and Rick Poepping‘s ‘04 Grand Prix GTP, (13.72/98.60). Also in attendance was the magnificent ’87 Grand National of Jim Saitz driven by his son, Dan, (whose ’07 Mustang set the GIR Turbocharged track speed record at 223.43 mph on Wednesday, May 30th). Jim recently bought the immaculate all-origina; Buick at auction with only 7400 original miles. “We just brought it over to see what it runs”, said Jim. Dan’s best was a 13.85/94.05...Anna Wazrodki has taken the lead the 2007 “Most Expensive Tuesday Night Vehicle” title with an ‘06 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG; the 492 horsepower, blown 339-inch V8-powered coupe ran a 12.76/111.29 with a pricetag of $121,275. Not far behind was the ‘07 Mercedes-Benz S550 of Tomek Artur which used a naturally-aspirated 382 hp 333-inch V8 to run 14.20/100.37 for a mere $101,000. Both Benzs beat out previous leader Mark Paule, whose $83,355 2001 Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas, (with a supercharged 244-inch V8), which was also running with a best of 14.14/96.84...Winners shared in a bounty of special prizes from SX Performance Fuel Systems including new fuel pumps, filters and regulators.

JUNE 5th, 2007 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Adnan Omerovic, St. Louis, MO 1995 122 Talon 0.454 11.060 137.53
RU Rick Howie, O'Fallon, IL 1992 112 Civic 0.084 11.963 122.28

Not many fans were surprised to see Adnan Omerovic’s black turbocharged Eagle Talon squaring off with Rick Howie’s white turbo Honda Civic hatchback for the third time in the six events completed so far in the 2007 St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown. However, the final round ledger fails to reveal the fact that neither would have been in the championship round were it not for problems experienced by the two quickest machines in the history of the class!

Early timed trials brought the first appearance of the season for Joe Laramee’s Decatur, Illinois-based ‘77 Ford Pinto which, on October 10th, 2006, became the first Sport Tuner to run under ten seconds while scoring a rare “double” in winning both the Sport Tuner and Street Car Shootouts. The turbocharged 147-inch four-banger opened with a great 10.35/130.56 for what would have been the best elapsed time of the season for a Tuner entry. However, Laramee discovered a head gasket problem immediately after the run and never made an official qualifying attempt!

Then, there was the plight of Four-Cylinder Record Holder Jon Huber, whose amazing turbocharged ‘79 Mustang had horrific difficulty hooking up on successive 11.57/133.98 and 10.96/121.96 runs and elected to withdraw from competition. Also notable was the debut of the revamped Front-Wheel-Drive Record Holding ’86 Volkswagen Golf of the Corbitt Brothers. With a rebuilt engine and a new turbocharger, the 123-inch VW made several easy shake-down runs before recording a best of 11.89/121.29 during qualifying. Adam Corbitt proved the worth of the new combination, however, by streaking to an 11.57/119.72 in late timed trials.

It was Omerovic, however, who led the official qualifying period with an early 11.14 at another huge 135.73 mph speed. The Eagle driver then parked the black Talon and simply waited to see how the field shaped up. Howie’s Civic eventually screamed to a best-ever 11.81 at its first speed over 120 mph, (121.97), to become the one hundred twenty-fifth member of the SCSS 120 MPH Club. “I was always shifting into fifth gear right at the finish line”, said Howie, “but I experimented a bit and just rode out fourth and let it hit the rev limiter a bit. It definitely improved the speed and the ET picked up with it”. Howie outqualified Corbitt, Brian Orsborn’s red ‘04 SRT-4 Neon, (a best of 12.35/118.93 after discovering broken motor mount from last week’s event), and Jason Grubb’s ‘04 Neon, (a career-best 13.32/105.41)

Howie gained a huge holeshot in the title bout but Omerovic made up the difference by half-track en route to his best run ever, a blistering 11.06 at an incredible 137.53 miles per hour. “We thought we had a problem after the May 22nd event and that‘s why we weren’t here last week”, explained Omerovic while accepting his sixth STSS winner’s trophy. “It turned out to be nothing but my friends at HillCo Axles are now officially a sponsor and they helped me get set up for this week again. I still think we can get it into the tens pretty soon. I might have been able to do it tonight if my sixty-feet ETs were a bit better. The car feels really good right now, though“.

JUNE 5th, 2007 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Hal Marshall, Collinsville, IL 1986 383 S10 0.447 10.288 130.44
RU Mike Williamson, Wentzville, MO 2000 330 Lightning 0.085 11.191 122.40

Hal Marshall is back! After taking a week off for a doctor’s appointment, the King of Tuesday Night returned to score his twenty-fourth title in the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown. The biggest shock, however, was the performance turned in by runner-up Mike Williamson’s show-quality yellow ’00 Lightning. The Wentzville, Missouri, Ford pilot had an interesting evening.

Marshall was quick to post a 10.26/129.49 blast with his white ‘86 S-10 pickup during qualifying but Williamson had already produced an 11.81/113.80 in what was perceived to be a battle between Williamson and defending weekly champ Mark Carneglio’s grey Lightning for the right to run Marshall in the final. Carneglio, with up to fifty more horsepower on tap since last week’s career-best 11.44/116.76, struggled with traction issues while hitting a best of 11.75/116.87 but still remained the second qualifier near the end of the qualifying period. Williamson, meanwhile, found himself completely sideways while making one the first runs after the massive oil down and quickly returned to the staging lanes in hope of getting one more shot at making the final round with the GIR crew returned to cleaning the track. He got his chance and took full advantage of it running a best-ever 11.49 at an amazing 123.10 mph. However, right at the finish line, the 120 mph air pressure popped his pickup bed’s cap sending it twenty feet into the air! “I didn’t know what happened!”, said a surprised Williamson before the final round. “Then, I looked behind me and saw the bed of the truck and it all made sense. My biggest problem is just controlling the truck…for some reason it’s all over the place at mid-track…so I was busy with other things at the time!”.

Williamson‘s third-of-a-second holeshot in the final kept Hal at bay for four hundred feet but the white S-10 knocked down Williamson for the second time this season with a 10.28/130.44. The biggest shock of the championship round, however, came from Williamson’s unreal 11.19 at 122.40 mph in his pursuit of Marshall, easily making the yellow masterpiece one of the quickest street-driven Lightnings on the planet. Moreover, the exposed bed proved that Williamson’s nitrous system was missing a key component…a nitrous oxide bottle! “I’m not even spraying it tonight”, said Williamson with a grin, “but it could get really interesting when I do!“.
