Mother Nature claimed her first victim in the 2008 Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway by washing out the second event of the new season after only thirty-one minutes of the official qualifying period. Along with the SCSS program, the rainstorm which cancelled activities also decimated the first of the 2008 Challenge Series programs featuring battle between rival colleges and universities.

After the season-opening event included a corrected elevation of over 870 feet below sea level, the warm front hanging over the Bi-State area seven days later produced a dismal reading of 1315 feet above sea level and few great performances were recorded in the brief qualifying session. Reigning SCSS Season Champion, Tim “Moose” Mallicoat, appeared after making multiple adjustments to the new chassis under his 565-cubic inch naturally aspirated ‘68 Camaro and clocked an arrow-straight 8.74/156.43 during early timed trials and was preparing for an official qualifying pass when the rains hit. Also ready to make a qualifying run was April 1st SCSS Champion Tony Huff who, wheeling Dale Huff’s Bill Silva-tuned nitrous oxide-aided 510-inch ‘66 Chevelle, was vying to become the first driver in SCSS history to earn a fiftieth “Fastest Street Car” qualifier decal.

Edwardsville, Illinois, Camaro pilot and four-time SCSS qualifier Nathan Grant paced the field at the time of cancellation with a 12.18 from his silver Chevy while becoming the 154th member of the SCSS 120 MPH Club after recording a best-ever 120.84 mph speed. Terry Myers’ 2008 LS3 Corvette was second at 12.67/114.77 just ahead of the remarkably efficient ‘87 350 Camaro of Litchfield, Illinois’ Dustin Bryant which clocked a 1.71-second sixty-feet elapsed time en route to a best of 13.15 at 100.99 mph.

The two quickest entries in the Sport Tuner Showdown recorded career-best numbers. Ryan Sedej pushed his blue 2004 Dodge Neon SRT-4 to a 13.44/109.91 in early timed trials before hitting a 13.61/109.98 in qualifying and Phil Wicks took his orange ‘05 SRT-4 to a 13.902/103.18 in the official period after a 13.91/103.79 in times trials.

Under Gateway International Raceway policies, the event was cancelled within two hours of the first run of the event and, therefore, all competitors and spectators were issued rain checks and no qualifying points or “Fastest Street Car” qualifier decals were awarded.
