Oil pressure dropped to zero on HWY, and now motor knocks
This is my brother in laws 1999 v6 firebird (a4) He was on his way to my house and while on the high way he said he noticed his oil pressure gauge had dropped to zero. He experianced a lack of power and then noticed a knocking and a bit of a squeling sound.
He pulled over and when I got there I checked the oil and he had a good level. I did notice some very small metal flakes from the oil on the dip stick. I had him breifly start the motor and can confirm that he has a knock from the bottom end.
I THINK his oil pump is shot and that he ruined a connecting rod bearing or worse. Does that sound like the likely problem/cause?

That does sound like the issue. One of my employees had a similar issue with his Chevy pickup. He pulled the pan and replaced the rod bearing with one that was slightly oversized, after polishing the crank with some fine grit sandpaper. He's still driving it

Re: Oil pressure dropped to zero on HWY, and now motor knocks
I bought a v6 firebird several years ago and a week later the motor threw a rod out of the block.
apparently what happened is the oil pump pickup was knocked upwards because someone dented the oil pan up a little, and therefor my motor got no oil. it knocked thru the block so bad that it damaged my starter.
lesson learned. I just rebuild my motor in my garage and i put on a brand new oil pump and measured out the pickup location.

Re: Oil pressure dropped to zero on HWY, and now motor knocks
i have a 96 3.8 camaro. took it to the shop cuz the oil pressure was dropping. the car itles at 30psi then as the car gets warm it would drop to 10psi. but the car ran normal! at first i thought it was the oil pump but it wasnt so they thought there might be a clog so they took it apart and found out the crankshaft bearing was bad so they replaced it and put the car back together. we started the car and it itles at 30psi then as the car gets warm it would drop to 10psi (samething that was happening when i took it in) so i take it home to look everywhere for leaks and on the way home the rockers start clicking. what do yall think?
