Ls1 GTO opinions
Coming home from dinner last night I was following the wife and kids and this GTO comes blasting up the road. Its a 3 lane road that goes thru Kingsport TN. Lots of traffic. So he wants to play a lil since he's acting like a complete tool but hence theres traffic everywhere. We get to do a few short pulls past each other but that's about it. It was the GTO with the LS1( single exhaust and 5.7 badge on back). Auto from what I can tell. Question is if we got a red light with no traffic what would my chances be. Its not a race that's gonna happen some other time, as I didn't know the guy, im just curious as to what would have been. Havent had any real competition in the Z since I have had her( mostly just ricers that was laughable and I let out after first gear). But from what I read about the LS1 GTO, their stock 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are about the same as a stock 95 Z28. Again I say about. lol. I know not to mess with the LS2 GTOs with the few mods I have. But since this was an LS1, just wondering. Just let me know what you think.

Stock vs stock, I'd bet on the GTO. Your gears would help initially, and your live axle has better launch characteristics than the wheel-hop-prone IRS on the GTO.
You might pull an early lead, but I would still expect the GTO to win at the top end.

It would be a good race. You would have the advantage from a dead stop as the GTO is heavy. With your 373 gears you would have the advantage. I think it would be quite even through out the race. Its possible the LS1 GTO might edge you out at the end of the 1/4 mile. It really depends how much you beat him off the start.
Put a set of headers and a tune on your LT1 and you wont have a problem with a stock LS1 GTO and may even stay ahead of a LS2 GTO. I have run a few new GTOs from a dead stop and stayed ahead of a stock LS2 GTO by a length and half. Beat a stock LS1 GTO pretty easy.
I have seen some LS2 GTO's run low low 13's and then some LS2's M6's run high 13's to low 14's at Atlanta dragway. Got to be in the driver.

Thanks for the imput. I was thinking the same as both of you. I figured maybe get him off the line and be dead even or he would reel me in at the end. LTs are #1 on my list of purchase and install items when my tax refund gets here. The local dragstrip holds events every week called street fights were you pay $10 to run as much as you want and I wouldn't mind seeing that guy there just to see the outcome. Its starting in a few months so we will see. Thanks again.
