Steering column mid-shaft link

There is too much freeplay in my steering system. I checked the rack and pinion, the linkages, the connectors. All were either replaced or checked. The only pending linkage to check/repair is the mid-shaft linkage in the steering column. Before removing the column, I would like to know if the mid-shafts can be removed from the bottom of the column assembly (once the steering wheel is removed of course). I have the service manuals for the car but the instructions are too general. It is not clear if the shafts can be removed with minimum disassembly.
