Exclamation g-load brace questions

What up,

So I did a trans swap in a stock '96 z28. I got it all back in and ready to go and seem to be missing the cross brace that goes under the drive shaft and exhaust that bolts to the floorboards, supposedly called the g-load brace? The car is new to me, got it last fall, pulled the trans in the winter and it sat until now when we finally got a new trans for it. The brace looks like it has 3 bolt holes in the body and looks like it somehow attached to the exhaust? I don't remember it even being there.

My questions are, do I need it in there? Does it attach to the exhaust at all? Finally, if it is best to have it in, where can I find one? (junkyard maybe?)

Thanks eerybody

Not much dog.

Yes you need it(transmission crossmember). You can get one from a salvage yard or grab an aftermarket one from UMI or BMR.

On my 6-speed manual, there is a bracket for the exhaust attached to the transmission itself.

This a picture for my stock cats, but it shows the crossmember well.

HAHA! thanks for the response!

OK, I know it's not the trans crossmember, which is the first black brace under the trans in your picture.(nice clean underbody!) But the one I was talking about is the one further back than that. With the two humps in it.

Re: g-load brace questions

i think what you are referring to is the x-brace. Thought it is on convertibles only and is supposed to help stiffen the car sans roof. Suppose you could put it on a coupe, there are also two bolts on the trans cross member that connect the cross memebr to the x-brace. Not sure if all cross-members have the extra bolt holes. I think the x-brace is not compatible with most of the triangular sfcs as the inboard sfc mount is the one the x-brace would use.

My 93 hardtop and 97 T top have that too. I thought they all did.

Re: g-load brace questions

i never really looked at the underside of a coupe. I see the brace aft of the trans crossmember. The convertible is a little different. Also ties to the trans cross-member, so is an x.
