Possible Forgoten GTO detail??????
It has been rumored that the Holden based GTO will be a "stop-gap" car, meaning that their is an American Version in the works.
I feel that this fact has been overlooked.
If the current receives bad reviews, we might not get the retro designed GTO, we all want: therefore, appreciate the fact you have a real RWD V8 muscle car now, and hope for the retro looks in the next gen GTO. You have to give a little to gain a lot.
Thoughts?????

1. Yes. It's no rumour, this IS a stopgap car.
2. Yes. I've tried to make this point before on here. If GTO fails, GM's board & upper management (GM is a "BUSINESS", remember?) will view this as the market rejecting a "Muscle car", and will go back to the safe bet. At the moment, this means something with AWD and resembles station wagons (see, I didn't use the term SUV!) or FWD family & rental sedans.
3. GM is most certainly not planning to make any high volume vehicle retro, especially the next Pontiac coupe aimed at as much as 75-100,000 units per year. It will be identifiable as a Pontiac. If the current Monte Carlo can be considered retro, then maybe. Otherwise, fergetaboutit !

I have faith in a RWD Monte SS coming out in the near future. Anyone think it might be on the same platform as an American-made GTO after the stop-gap car is gone? Just a thought.

I hate the term "Stop-Gap" for this GTO... I don't knwo where that started, but it really cheapens the appeal of the car.
It's like saying "Well, this is all we got until we can do it right"... if that's the case, don't release it, or at least don't tag it with a legendary name.
I'm sure the GTO is going to be a great all around car. Heck, I might even consider buying one if the price is right, but I get this whole "bastardized" image of the car when I hear "stop-gap"...
Maybe it's just me...

Bob Lutz. NY Auto Show I believe. He was refering to Holden imports in general at the time.

Yeah, that's what I figured after I thought about it a while...
Very disappointing choice of words from him, IMHO...
It's like he's kind of slapped this car before it's even here, and it's his idea to begin with.
I think Mr. Lutz will do some good things, and honestly, while I am disappointed in the lack of creativity in the re-skin for the GTO... I am glad they are bringing it over... I just don't get why he would slap such a derogatory label on this car.

I think the "gap" being "stopped" is a gap in availability of this type of car built here in the States. So basically the GTO is filling in the gap between the death of the 4th gen F-body and the future "made in the USA" RWD coupe, whatever that might be. In this case I think it's more of an observation that anything else, like he's just pointing out the obvious. I didn't really see it as a negative connotation. $0.02

I agree, I don't think the word "stopgap" necessarily has to have a negative meaning. This car is exactly that, it's filling the gap between now and an all-American GTO.

This something I read,"...and, in an apparent move to head off, or counter, a plan by Ford Australia to revive the GTHO name, GM has also filed for the Australian trademark: GTO".
just this and that
