A thought from long ago...
I know this is old, but it STILL looks great, IMHO...
The 1989 Stingray III concept car... while I never thought fit the Corvette look, I always felt it would make an excellent Camaro... obviously, it'd have to be made into a 4-seater, etc etc, but I always thought it had a strong "Camaro Look", at least the front and sides. Very modern (even today) and agressive... I love it!

I think that car had a DOHC V6. I never thought it looked much like a Corvette either.

When the Stingray III came out I just thought it was awesome...and I always thought it would have made a better Camaro than Vette also.
...it would have made a great 4th gen...but for a 5th gen...I think I'd like some fresher styling.

Yea it was designed in GM's Cali studio. I thought it would have made a fugly Corvette but as a Camaro I think it would look good. It seemed to have lots of F-body style looking like the concept Banchee and the Camaro concept "Z" I think. Very angled but smooth lines and sunk in flush headlights. When I worked at GM Design I had a picture of the Banchee and the Sting Ray III over my cubicle. They were taken in our courtyard with the styling dome in the background. Wish I could've taken them with me!

I agree. I think the Stingray III looked more like a Camaro than the California Camaro concept did.

Wow. 4 responses... all positive!
Maybe this is a direction worth looking at for GM... it would be a good stepping stone anyway...

That's neat. I remember looking at this car about a year ago and thinking that the lights look kinda like the california iroc concept, and then looking at the rest of the car and thinking it would make a great camaro.

I'm going to have to break the streak and say I don't care for it that much. I was never a big fan of the Stingray III or Mustang Mach III. It does seem similar to the California Camaro concept, which heavily influence the 4th gen. I didn't care much for the IndyVette of the same time period. I really like how the C5 turned out though.

In this case, I think its best to let the past stay in the past.

I wanted to dig this out of the Thread Dungeon and dust it off after we got a look at this years Concept Cars...
I still think that the Stingray III would be a very nice place to start (styling wise) for a 5th Gen Camaro....
IMO, even moreso than the SS Concept.

From that side profile, i see a little bit of c5.
Other then that front end, i kind of like it. For an 89 design, it's really sharp. But i don't think it'd have made a nice 4th gen camaro. I don't know about you guys but i don't see "camaro" in that design, and i think a car like the camaro has to have a distinctly recognizable design. You could see some strong 3rd gen cues and influences on what later on became the 93-97 4th gen camaro's.

My thoughts exactly...
And with that, it'd be a great basis for an "evolutionary" 5th Gen Camaro

I don't know about that. Maybe a 98+ firebird, but no camaro.
