Want the SS but cant afford it...V6?
I really want the new Camaro SS but just wont be able to afford the monthly payment...If i would get the V6 version...would it be looked down upon by the V8 SS crowd...seems like the V6 has more hp than the V8's of the 80's, 90's and sum of the 2000's camaro's.

I don't think it would be looked down upon. The V6 Mustang is, but if you look at it, you can see why.
If you get the V6 with the RS package, I think you would love it. Plus, I can verify that the DI V6 is smooth and pretty quick. I love the engine, as it is in my Caddy.
That should sell you right there. The top line CTS (besides the V) uses the same V6 that will be put in the Camaro.

Insurance should be no difference at all between the trim levels of the Camaro. The SS is not considered a different model, only a different trim level. My '98 SS was insured in NY and I was told by numerous insurance companies, including my own Allstate, that the Camaro was the same rate across the board...and that of course was in NY, where everyone tries to get you to pay more for everything

It shouldn't matter what other ppl think. If the V6 fits your budget and you love the car and don't care about the 130 hp difference between the 6 and 8 then go for it.

I can assure the V6 won't dissapoint. I've driven a 1LT and the SS back to back. The SS is exactly what you expect from a small block V8 with over 400 HP. But the V6? It's a pleasant surprise every time. It amazes me that hasn't worn off yet. The only thing with the 1LT is I don't car for the wheel style or size. A V6 RS fixes that nicely.

Another option would be wait and save some money. Then put it down for the SS. later your going to want to trade it in for the SS. that's what im doing saving up

The biggest problem with buying the V6 will be the much higher depreciation of its value. Look at the 4th gens. You can't give away a V6 model, but the V8s are still popular.

Actually I don't think that will affect the 5th gen as much... You can't compare it to the 4th gen V6 cars since they've been around for so long and there are so many of them available. The 5th gen will be a novelty and I think at least for the first years you won't really have much trouble selling a V6 5th gen. It may depreciate a bit more than the V8 models but not much IMO.

Wait till gas is $4 or more again, then the almost 20% better mileage will help the v6 used market.
I have a '97 lt1 which might not beat the new V6. Either way the lt1 gets HORRIBLE mileage so I might have to sell it before gas goes sky high. Also, I'm sure they'll have a supercharger out for the v6 in no time which will up the v6 to some really fun power! A supercharger will make it feel like a V8.
So there you go, I have a V8 camaro and even I'm thinking of going with the V6 for a lot of reasons. It's not like the last time when the v6 was really whimpy. And, the new V6 costs as much as the V8 did last time.

I just got my car and driver in the mail today... The V6 does 0-60 in 5.9 seconds, the 1/4 mile in 14.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 157 mph!!! These numbers are right on par with my LT1 stock. Nobodys gonna be looking down on you but if they aint careful they'll be looking from behind you!!!

Get it
I'm getting it and I could afford the 2ss. The V6 is nothing to sneeze at.
Its the most powerful V6 running on 87 octane and named one of the top 10 engines of 09. Over 11:1 compression ratio on 87 octane!!!
Get the LT. It gets 29mpg. Its got 304HP. Its lighter (more lateral g's). It still goes 155mph and gets there quick enough IMO. And when gas goes back up (and it will) you'll be wishing you had the V6. With the RS package you got the same tires and rear spoiler and HID lamps (a must have). Get the standard though for the fun factor and limited slip diff.
If you were considering the V6 mustang, yeah you'd be crazy to buy the 6. I'd shame you myself, but not with this baby.
There willl be plenty mods to the V6 if you decide its not enough too. I saw some posts on the Caddy CTS with just a cold air intake and exhaust you could get somewhere in the mid 30's for hp gain and still get the same mpg (when you foot is out of it). Add some twin turbos and who knows. You might as well buy the LS3 for the price of the turbos and tuning though.
Of course the LS3 has plenty of room to grow too and that's absolutely awesome if your gonna take it to the strip or blow away mustangs at stop lights (not that you need mods for that). I think the words out not to even try though unless they want a good look at the 69 style rear end .
Your more likely to get them to try if you have the 6. Wouldn't that be cool to blow away a 2010 mustang GT with a moded V6. Hey you might get em without mods.
Besides, I don't know about you but I have to buy the gas to get me the 45 miles to work.
Ray

Here's my $.02.
If you really want the SS model, keep saving until you can afford it. Don't settle for less than what you want if you can help it. Patience is a definitely a virtue.
If, in the mean time, your current ride breaks down/quits, go ahead and buy the V6. For the price, it cant' be beat in terms of style, mpg, power, refinement, etc.
