Wheels and tires for the snow

We don't get much snow here in Jersey, but we do get ice and salt.

I getting an SS with 20" polished wheels.

I would like to get some steel wheels and at least all-season (if not all out winter) tires for the car.

Im wondering if something is or will be available.
I don't even mind if the wheels are smaller as long as they can fit around the big brakes.

Good to see Im not the only future 5th genner from Jersey on here that thought about it after this recent blast.

I think that the 18 inch steelies from teh LS SHOULD fit, and the reason I say that is the old CTS-V had the same brake package the SS has, 14/4 pistion front and 14.4/4 piston rear, and they had 18's on them.
Now tires...thats a horse of a different color. What are the standard tire size for the LS cars? 245/50-18 something like that?

Do you really think an 18" wheel will fit over those brakes.
If they do, then why didn't they offer a spare?
I assumed the SS didn't get a spare because the smaller wheels would fit over the brakes.
Oh and I hope for the people who get the LS with 18 wheels don't have 245/55-18 tires.
A friend of mine has a Maurader with that back tire size and he can't get tires for his car.
Only BFG sells that size and they are out of stock and don't expect to get more in till later this year.
For me I thought at first I would just get all-seasons to replace what's on there when they wore out and just give up the performance.
Only problem is those polished wheels will get wrecked with the salt.
So I'll probably just get a cheap set of 20" wheels and put Blizzaks or something on them.
Some one else mentioned the TPMS sensors, I guess I would have to buy a second set of sensors too.

I belong to that, was even president for 2 years. I still go to events with them but my Caprice is wrecked.

I could only find BFG for that size as well. If you replace it with a 255/55/18 they are a lot more common and only change the speed about 1 mph at 65mph and get a little more traction out of it as well.

I could live with the steel wheels for the snow, if they fit the SS.

18's should, as they fit over the brakes of the CTS-V. The Z06 has 18/19's over larger rotors and calipers. Hell, the ZR1's 15.5/6 pistons fit get 19s up front with 20's in back. Shouldnt be a problem.

Yes, the dreaded TPMS sensors. You could buy another set, or just disreguard the light for the few months out of the year!! 20 inch steelies would be another choice, but the choice of snow tires available in that size would be hard.
Going to the larger tires should be ok as wel for the snow tires.

I have heard of BEASST and am on a few Impala/Caprice sites, but the Caprice is slowing turning into a big parts car! I lost the love for these big Bbodies a bit.

Yeah, but with snow, you actually would like to have a smaller section width. Think of a snow shoe, the one that looks like a big tennis racket. It displaces the weight of your body over a larger area compared to your foot where it would sink right into the snow.
With the car, you DONT want it to ride ontop of teh snow, but sink into it. So, a 235/60-18 would be a good choice.
Problem is that it turns into a truck-type tire or at best, a cross-over tire. Oh well, maybe with time, there will be more choices....
