Obd 3?

I appologize for not stating my question the other day, what i am wanting to know is the OBD III is from my understanding something like California OBDII...i live in midwest so i am not sure what that means but i have read/heard somethings like police can detect a fault by just passing by you......like i say this is all heresay...no proof of any kind this is true, is this the way Calf. OBD II is? I have visited the site quite a bit getting info for the Camaro figured someone here might know. Also just want to say this is a great site and i can't wait for the (my)camaro!

The major hurdle (as I understand it) for OBD III to be introduced is that it transmits data about the fault to somone. I am not sure if it's the EPA, the manufacturer or your local dealer, or some combination. But there are a lot of people who would view this as an invasion of privacy, given that your approximate location, as well as your speed and whole bunch of other info could be sent out to whomever is listening.
I have also heard (I can't remember if this was a definate or a rumor, probably heard it here) that some sort of Police cut-off will be included. While this would be good for stopping high speed chases and insuring that cars which are pulled over stay pulled over, I don't want anyone to remotely shut off my car. I know that this would be implemented with the best of intensions, but there would be abuses of the system, and I can only imagine if someone was able to hack the system and shut off ppls car and carjack/mug them or worse.
As far as I know, OBD 3 is going to be a big step up from OBD 2. More or less all the engine/emission sensors will have sensors on them to inform the tech who's working on the car exactly what failed.

The fact that is that if a cop had away to do that, it would be such a huge liabilty. They would never do that, personally, i would fight that all the way down.
Imagine if a cop accidentally turns your car off at the wrong time, you have no power steering, no power brakes, no speed control. Then you blindside a mother with her 2 year old in the back, you kill the kid and the mother. WHOS FAULT IS IT...
There is no way any Department of Transportation would allow this. If they did, i would rip it off my car and pay the ticket. I will never allow someone to monitor me or control me when I am in my own vehicle. Total invasion of privacy.
i agree with what everyone says, just sometimes you wonder if the government is maybe getting/able to get to much information....it will be sad times when when/if your car can rat you out.....Bumblebee wouldn't
If the cops could ever do that there would be more lawsuits than cars with that option on the road! All you would have to say is you were under power in a turn an them taking away your power caused you to hit the rail.
Cops already do this. I've seen several programs that show car thieves stealing a car that has been setup by the police in a sting style operation. They disable the car and the thieves are then arrested. If there were to be a lawsuit, one would have already occurred. I know nothing about whether OBD3 will contain such features, but I doubt if any lawsuit will result, seeing as something so similar already has been going on for some time now.

Exactly what you said though, SETUP by the police. They can't just do it to any car (ATM) the cars they do it with are wired in to a control unit that the monitor/control for the sole purpose of getting car thiefs put in to jail.
I should have been more specific as to what I was arguing. Some people were suggesting that the car being turned off would cause accidents that would lead to lawsuits. I was simply stating that cars are already being turned off and no lawsuits have come of it. You are correct that there are other complications to simply putting this technology into every day cars, but honestly it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if we soon see this happen. There seems to be no end in sight to big brother...
GM already has this OBD3 setup in test vehicles.It does relay fault codes back to GM and they send you a letter stating that you must have this fixed w/in 14 days or the vehicle w/ be disabled.That is what I have found out about this OBD3 so far.Progressive insurance is one of the companies out there that is tryin to push this into production to monitor insured motorists.Which in my opinion and most others is not right.And they say Big Brother isnt watching??? Ya right!!!!!!
