You can check out www.ls1sounds.com to get an idea of what different exhaust setups sound like. There are alot of anti-Flowmaster people on here so they will probably recommend you anything else but that. Try doing a "search" as well, lots of good posts have been made covering this topic.

I wouldn't waste money on flowmasters. My current car has a 40 series and it sounds ok but everyone seems to have one so its not unique. Plus I have seen dyno graphs that show no gain over a stock muffler. You should save up for a quality catback like a GMMG or a Borla.

i know borla and gmmc are both high quality and yeild more gains than most, but both are highly overpriced.
why not do a true duel system with dumps if there are no government regulations to prevent so?
you can get a true duel system for 310 installed, if you buy the parts from summit and get a exhaust guy that actually knows what he is doing. my guy charged me 120 to fab it up after i handed him 2 dynomax bullets and a summit x pipe.
it sounds great, is not loud and i actually felt an improvement (stock manifold bolt on car at the time). your going to spend way more than that on borla or gmmc and most likely not get the same gains.

how much do you have to spend? mileage? auto or 6 speed?
start with plugs, wires, 02's if needed, FUEL FILTER. get your car running right before you mod.
after this look at what you want the car to be in the end. ie. street/strip, autocross, 1/4 only, fun daily driver, show car.
see what you have to spend and do the most you can for the $$$

1. moroso cold air induction
gain around 12rwhp this on went for 110 shipped old thread
http://www.camaroz28.com/forums/showt...+air+induction
2. exhaust cut-out
gain 8rwhp over stock, you can get them for 33 bucks out of a summit.
they are a piece of pipe that welds into your exhaust piping that you can open up to run open-headers pretty much. can be capped and exhaust ran though the whole exhaust.
3. air foil
20 bucks used off the boards could pick up 5rwhp. goes on throttle body and smooths out the air going into it.
these are all estimates. so for 160$ you got 20hp. this is where i would start if i were on a budget.
next i would upgrade the whole exhaust ie. true duels it cost me 310.
then gears 3:73's
