A kid at school wants me to race, we was sappose to race couple months ago, but oddly enough he ripps out his clutch the day before the race. He wanted to race for like 2 miles, I thought this was kind of stupid myself because 2 miles going 100+ = huge finds court, danger of getting pulled over. So I may drag race him, what do you guys think? His car has a V6 5 speed( I think)(and looks like its been to hell, dusty ect.) and I have an lt1 stock with an exhaust leak and an A4 with 2.73's. He asked how fast I was in the quarter and I said stock z28's go around 100, and he said "slow take off". So who would win?

 

Id go out on a limb.. and say you.. but i need to know whats done to the rx7.. more than likely its rotory.. maybe turbo? not sure what they do to those 1st gen rx7s(dunno what they run stock either) but my guess is its not gonna be real fast...

 

I think its stock there defently no turbo's or nothing of that sort on it. Not even a rotory as far as I know. Just in case though, what if it does have a rotory motor in it? Without turbo or NOS or anything of that sort.

 

I vote you. Don't let old rotory engines scare you... old mazda rotory without mods are like old turbos they spool up slow and are only good on top end. The LT1 you have will pull hard down low and the A4 means no chance of mis shift

 

It does have a rotary. RX7's came with rotories. Their one of the only cars that does.

That one, if its stock, is non-turbo, and will, at best, be a 16-17 second car ( If its stock ) ... Now if he has a turbo motor from a newer 2nd gen (Possible )or 3rd gen ( Doubtful ) he could give ya a run for your money. Cause if he went through the trouble of doing a motor swap, you know it aint stock. And they respond well to mods. They just dont last long. And definaly take him from a stop, not a roll. That car will fall on its face from a stop. Non turbo rotories make NO TQ, and especailly not down low.

This kid sounds like a boner who dont know nuthing about cars. That car is more competition for a 3.1 Camaro, or something.

You cvouldnt get a Turbo RX7 until 88' or 89' I think and the Turbo II's came out in 90 or 91? Even at that though, I rode in a Turbo II that was modded, and even it felt like a dog until it wound out. I was not impressed. I mean, I bet it was deep in 14's but ...

 

I figured id beat him, He says his car will do 140(Im douting that but), and thats one of the reasons I do not want to do a 2 mile race, the other reason is my car shuts off at 108? Ill ask him if he wants to drag, im sure he will say no though. If not then I guess it shows where we stand, I offerd him a race, he never showed first time, hes asked for a race 2 times since. Ill just spank him in a drag, that way he can come off his "my cars a beast" throne he sits on at school.

 

What do you mean "shuts off at 108mph"? Does it hit redline at that speed? I think top speed of the 94 Z28 was like 155mph or something...

 

Its speed limiter. Id have it taken off, but until I break 108 in the quarter, im not because I might get out of hand.

 

race him for money. I had a 1991 mazda rx7 and that was slow as sh**. I raced like 4 people in it and then I couldnt take it anymore so I sold it. 80s and pre 93 rx7's come with 1.3 liter two rotor rotary motors. Unless they are turboed they are slow, but thats not for just that motor, any non-turbo rotory is slow, thats how they are. One more thing, from a stop, they have absolutely no power, thats why he wants to race from a roll. Also they have no redline, at least thats what mazda sais.
I think rx7 is no competition for the LT1, I raced a 4 cylinder 2.0l stock mx6 with my rx7 and I got killed, so that will give you an idea of how slow they are. And my rx7 was in pretty good shape, it wasnt a beater.

The Turbo II that I test drove, had some sort of CAI attached to the top mount intercooler. Full exhaust: Down pipe, no cats, some sort of loud *** non-fart-can muffler. And the boost was cranked to 14psi I think he said?

Regardless, it felt SIGNIFICANTLY slower than my ( At the time ) stock LT1 ... NO TQ, but it wound out to like 9 grand lol. It sounded mean as hell. It did have a nice top end to it, but it was turboed, modded, and still a good bit slower ...

 

even the newer 2004+ rx8 are crappy, i drove an auto rx8 and that was no competition for an lt1, maybe itll give a run to early 80s 305 z28s that have like 160hp.

 

RX-8's are usually a mid 14 sec- high 14 sec car. I wouldnt say no competition for a stock lt1. 250bhp on a 2940 lb car. They only have 159 lb/ft torque so thats why they "feel slow".

You should have no problem with that rx-7. If its dusty and all crappy i doubt that he has taken car of the engine let alone modded it.

EDIT: autos only have 197 hp

 

there is no way the rx8 i drove was a 14 sec. car, we test drove it with my friend and we were shocked by how slow it was. I dont know how that car can break 14s even with a stick.

 

I have the April '03 C&D where they did road tests between the Cobra, G35 and RX8. Of course the Cobra was ranked last by C&D, and the RX8 was 1st because it was brand new and Mazda probably paid C&D a good amount of money to rank it 1st. They tested the 6 speed and i think the auto has less hp . They listed 0-60 in 5.9sec. and standing 1/4 in 14.5 at 96mph.
