Weight

I know most don't give a rat's arse, but what do you THINK it will weigh in at? If it comes in at 3400 lb. or less, I'm interested in getting one. But based on the CTS-V's weight of 3850 lb., I'm guessing:

3600 lb.

Re: Weight

3500 sounds about right, but with 400hp, I wont complain.

While that would be cool, that's more like Vette or Solstice weight. Not possible on a Pony Car.

Re: Weight

CTS-V is also taller and packed with content and extra sound deadening that won't be needed in a Chevy.

I think 3500 is doable....3400 depending on how the car is packaged, but its going to be a stretch, particulalrly with things like a trunk and those quarter windows adding structure and complexity.

Re: Weight

What does a current Mustang GT weigh? I would expect something similar. I'd love to see 3000 lbs, but even the 2 seat, flagship Vette is a bit above that (3130 Z06, ~3250 targa/conv.). I just hope it is a good bit lighter than the GTO (~3750).

I've talked about this before, though. I'm all about low weight, but nowadays 3500 lbs isn't exactly fat. With all the luxo and safety and sound-killing stuff on cars these days, weight just goes up. BMW 5 series are known for their exemplary handling, and they weigh ~4000 lbs. The 3800+ lb CTS-V is no slouch either. Dodge Chargers and their fellow LX ilk are over 4000 lbs. Even the new Mitsubishi Eclipse is around 3500 lbs in V6 form, IIRC. Suddenly our "antiquated, overweight" 4th gen Z28s at 3400-3500 lbs aren't so fat.

That said, I'd love to see 3000 lbs, but will be fine (I guess) if it is in the 3500 lb range. 3800 lb would piss me off for a car of this purpose...

I don't see the Solstice ever getting down to 2500lbs, and the Vette will definetly never get anywhere near that.

I would be happy at this point to see 3500lbs. Z284ever seems to think 3650 is a more optimistic figure.

Re: Weight

If its more than 3600 lbs I'll just drop an LS2/LS7 into a 4th gen.

Re: Weight

Edmunds.com says CTS-V weighs 3850, Cadillac.com says CTS-V weighs 3509.

Edmunds reports a Mustang GT at 3450lbs.

I'd definitely like to see the 5th Gen come in lighter than a 4th Gen.
4th Gen was ~3425... Be nice if the 5th Gen could tip the scales at 3350.

Re: Weight

The Mustang GT weighs 3450-3550. If you are thinking that a V8 Camaro, with all the accompanying options desired, IRS, 400hp, and meeting all crash standards for 2009/10, is going to come in under 3600-3700lbs, you are only fooling yourself.

Cars are only going to get heavier and heavier, as crash standards/ federally mandated equipment gets higher and higher. Unless you want more aluminum............ and are will to pay $40K or so for your Z28/SS............ don't expect a "lightweight."

Is the Mustang expected to undergo a significant redo (adding weight and/or cost) to meet the crash standards you are talking about? All else being more or less equal, I don't see why the Camaro would be much heavier than the Mustang, even with IRS, especially since the small block derivative will likely be lighter than the Mustang's powerplant.

I have no idea of weight targets though; I'm just sort of thinking out loud (or rather, on the keyboard).

Re: Weight

I have no idea. I just know that there are some increased side impact regulations coming............ and probably much more than that also (I believe compliance is due by the 2010MY). If these regs were known when the Mustang was designed, it probably will not be a big deal to meet them............ if not............ well, who knows.

One other thing on weight. If the car will ever have a convertible version......... or t-top version............. it has to be designed with extra rigidity in the body to accomodate that. That adds weight also.
